1 | Are we to pray to the holy spirit? | Matt 6:9 | Hank | 155169
bjma4: You may be at as much of a loss as I am to understand why another Forum user would express surprise at the answer I previously gave you concerning prayer. It was, as you know, a direct quotation from Matthew 6:9, wherein Jesus taught His disciples to pray, "Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name." That is our Lord's instructions. You have been given different instructions by another user of this Forum. You may, of course, decide whether to follow Jesus' instructions on prayer, or the tutelage of a Forum poster. The decision, I believe, won't be difficult for you. I'm sorry that on your initial post you were exposed to this sort of thing. There is a lesson in it, however, that pertains to all believers, and that lesson is to accept no teaching by any one any where at any time that is not firmly grounded in the word of God, the Bible. What Jesus taught in Matthew 6:9 is the truth. Anything that is taught that is at variance with what Jesus taught is not the truth. --Hank
2 | Are we to pray to the holy spirit? | Matt 6:9 | iktoose | 155209
Hi Hank, I had a question about praying to God and proper way to address Him. Since we are discussing the "prayer," I thought it is a good thread to bring up my question. I have always addressed Him, "Heavenly Father," or Dear "Heavenly Father" when I pray. I have seen some church leaders addressing Dear "Lord Jesus," when they pray on behalf of the congregation. Is this biblically correct? Should we concerned about it? iktoose |

3 | Are we to pray to the holy spirit? | Matt 6:9 | Hank | 155222
iktoose: Thanks for your question. Let me give you some Scriptures and ask you to search them out as well as doing additional research on your own, and in that regard I would recommend that you use an exhaustive concordance which will enable you to read everything that Scripture says concerning prayer. Intensively searching the Scriptures is the only way I know of to learn what the Bible teaches on prayer or any other topic. ...... Jesus prayed to the Father (Matt. 11:25,26; John 11:41,42; John 12:28; John 17:1-26; Matt. 26:39,42,44; Matt. 27:46; Luke 23:34,46). ..... Jesus taught His disciples to pray to the Father (Matt. 6:6 and 6:9; Luke 11:2). ..... The disciples prayed to the Father for confidence in Acts 4:23-31. In the parable of the Pharisee and tax collector, the publican prayed to the Father to have mercy on him, a sinner (Luke 18:9-14). Paul prayed to the Father through Jesus Christ (Romans 1:8-10). Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and men (1 Tim. 2:5) and the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in our prayers with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26,27). For other references of Paul's prayers to the Father see Eph. 3:14-21; 2 Tim. 1:3; 1 Cor. 1:4; Philippians 1:3; Col. 1:3; 1 Thess. 1:2; and 2 Thess. 1:3. --Hank
