1 | What does water baptism do? | Matt 3:15 | Makarios | 52640 | ||
Greetings Grace and Truth, 1 Peter 3:21 is missing the word "water" in reference to baptism.. Ephesians 5:26 is referring to the Word of God, not baptism.. Colossians 2:12 does not mention the word "water" in reference to baptism.. Galatians 3:27 does not mention the word "water" in reference to baptism.. 1 John 5:8 could very well be referring to water baptism.. I do not dispute the fact that baptism is definitely something to be joyful and rejoice in, as in Acts 8:39. Romans 6:3-4 does not mention the word "water" in reference to baptism.. As for Acts 22:16, it is the LORD who forgives and cleanses us from our sins. It is not baptism. Please see Psalm 79:9, Mark 2:7-11, Luke 5:20-25. One could easily argue that the remission of sins comes from one's own repentance rather than baptism in Acts 2:38... As for John 3:5: Yes, it does parallel Ezekiel 36:25-27. However, Titus 3:5 tells us that the "active agent" here is the Holy Spirit, not water. Matthew 3:15 is referring to John's baptism of Jesus by water, and this verse does not clearly(within the immediate context of the verse) apply a universal meaning to everyone regarding baptism, even though I would agree that baptism is righteous and should be undertaken. Jesus is simply telling John that this is something that must be done, even though you don't see John being baptised by Jesus or by any one of His disciples. Titus 3:5 states, "he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit," [RSV] Therefore, we are not saved by being baptised by water. We are saved because of the Holy Spirit living and dwelling within us. I believe that water baptism is very important even though I do not believe that it is absolutely necessary for a person to be baptised by water in order to have salvation in Jesus' name. Blessings to you, Makarios |

1 Peter 3:21 is missing the word "water" in reference to baptism.. Look at vs.20 All the other for mentioned verses, if you follow closely in the book of Acts you will see weather its water or not. Acts 19 for Ephesus, Galatia Acts 16. And remember verses were added for ease of reading, we really need to make the connection by knowing when a point begans and when it ends 1Peter3:20-21. |
