1 | Please help the ignorant and arrogant... | Matt 27:46 | ezekiel | 19040
My friend I think first we must understand who Jesus Christ is. Second part of what we read in this account is a fulfillmen of Prophecy. All of what happens in this passage is the grand design of the Almight God. Mat 27:46 - My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Qee mou, qee mou, ina ti me egkatelipes). Matthew first transliterates the Aramaic, according to the Vatican manuscript (B), the words used by Jesus: El"i, el"i, lema sabachthanei; Some of the MSS. give the transliteration of these words from Psa_22:1 in the Hebrew (Eli, Eli, lama Zaphthanei). This is the only one of the seven sayings of Christ on the Cross given by Mark and Matthew. The other six occur in Luke and John. This is the only sentence of any length in Aramaic preserved in Matthew, though he has Aramaic words like amen, corban, mammon, pascha, raca, Satan, Golgotha. The so-called Gospel of Peter preserves this saying in a Docetic (Cerinthian) form: "My power, my power, thou hast forsaken me!" The Cerinthian Gnostics held that the aeon Christ came on the man Jesus at his baptism and left him here on the Cross so that only the man Jesus died. Nothing from Jesus so well illustrates the depth of his suffering of soul as he felt himself regarded as sin though sinless (2Co_5:21). Joh_3:16 comes to our relief here as we see the Son of God bearing the sin of the world. This cry of desolation comes at the close of the three hours of darkness. Because of the fact that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. His sinless life, his hatred of sin and the fact of the GREAT BATTLE that was taking place at the cross between Jesus and Satan. Everything that was lost in the Garden of Eden, was regained by the Second Adam, Jesus Christ at Calvary. The veil was rent in twain and Mankind once again has Immeadiate access to God Almighty. By the Blood of Jesus Christ we can be set free. And he who the Son has Set free is free indeed. I hope this helps if not I will try todo a better job next time. Ezekiel |

2 | Yes, but what happened back then? | Matt 27:46 | Bill Mc | 19053
Dear Ezekiel, thanks for your reply but despite it, my question was still not answered. I'd like to know why Jesus said this. I agree that it was a fulfillment of the verse in Psalms, but, by its very nature, a fulfillment is a literal in-time occurence of something that is foretold before-hand. In other words, if a prophecy is fulfilled, then it happens just as it was prophesied. So, what is the meaning behind the prophecy? To just state that Christ was fulfilling prophecy in and of itself is circular reasoning. I.e. It was foretold throughout the OT that Messiah would suffer and die. Isaiah 53 is an excellent passage that Christ fulfilled. But Christ did not fulfill Isaiah 53 just to fulfill Isaiah 53. He died to provide reconciliation and forgiveness of sins. So, although I agree that He fulfilled the 'forsaken' prophecy, what actually happened when God forsook Him? That is my question. |

3 | Yes, but what happened back then? | Matt 27:46 | geoff_youngs | 19082
It was on the cross that Jesus took sin upon himself. (Note the singular - Jesus dealt with sin itself, not just individual sins). Because he had become the scapegoat, God had to turn his face away. We can't really contemplate how Jesus, having lived his entire life according to his Father's will in constant communion with him, felt when God turned his face away; we can see or understand most of the suffering in terms of the hurt of friends betraying and denying you, the false accusations, the physical pain, the mockery, seeing the tears of your mother as she sees her firstborn son, promised by God, crucified before her eyes, but the turning of God's face away is not something that we, as Christians, will ever experience. God turned his face away from Jesus so that he would never have to turn it away from us. |

4 | Yes, but what happened back then? | Matt 27:46 | CDBJ | 19093
I think that it was so bad at that time for Jesus; that this is why there was the darkness that is spoken of. Jesus endured all the abuse that mankind could dish out, but when God the Father poured out the sins of the world on His Son He screamed out. He could not contain the agony in silence any longer. It was super excruciating being made sin for us and separated form God. No person on this side of the grave will ever experience this kind of pain. Only unbelievers after death will know what it was like, and they will suffer like this for eternity because they rejected God's sacrifice of His Son. CDBJ
