2 | What does Matt 24:34 mean? | Matt 24:34 | washicd | 219459
ronald, realizing the question was asked many years ago, and realizing you havent posted here since, never the less, i would like to weigh in with a response. the subject of this verse(matt 24:34) begins with Jesus' desciples asking him "what shall be the sign of Thy coming at the end of the world?" Jesus replies with a generous list of signs which will mark the generation of His return at the 'end of the world'. while the fall of jerusalem around 70AD was surely a rough time, it could hardly be the fulfillment of matthew 24:21 "For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be." this alone should make it obvious that the fall of jerusalem in 70 is not one of the signs of the end of the world. Christ also assures them(verse 26) that His return will not be hidden or secret and that they will not have to rely on murmurings and rumors, for His return will be as obvious as a lightning bolt (ver 27) which can be seen from a great distance, even when looking in the opposite direction. it will be as evident as the location of a carcass when the eagles are circling(ver 28). what a fitting description of the end times! all this will occur at a time when the world will be as it was in noah's day(verse 37) when the angels came and defiled the earth and men's thoughts were evil continually. the generation that observes these signs, the same generation will live to see His return at the end of the world. Lord grant us eyes to see and ears to hear. -washicd |

3 | Did he come back? | Matt 24:34 | Craney | 220335
I read the answers given but they still don't really help in explaining why Jesus said that all of those things would happen before that generation passed away. Everything he stated has occurred except for his return. This verse includes his return in the events. So, did we miss it, or did it not happen?
4 | Did he come back? | Matt 24:34 | DocTrinsograce | 220339
Hi, Craney... Welcome to the forum! There have been lots of analysis of this passage, and the similar ones of Matthew 16:28; 23:36; Mark 13:30; and Luke 21:32. Indeed, many wise and learned people Christians have worked on it for some twenty centuries. On this forum you will predominantly find laity, along with a few pastors. Consequently, I do not think you will get a definitive answer that settles it. You see, part of it has to do with the eschatological presuppositions with which you approach these passages. Dispensationalists, futurists, preterists, partial preterists, etc. would tend to give it a different spin -- often with good reason. Clearly, however, Christ's Second Coming has not taken place. Thus, one may very logically conclude that (1) the Return is not actually part of the events; (2) none of the events have yet occurred. For a variety of reasons, too numerous to address here, I think (1) is more likely. There's a lot of prophecy mongering going on out there, but I think it is rarely beneficial. Fortunately, the Scriptures are packed full of things that we can talk about in definitive and exhaustive fashion. Indeed, those are the things that will always be of the greatest benefit to the believer. In Him, Doc |
