1 | Two aspects of the will of God | Matt 23:37 | Morant61 | 70572 | ||
Greetings John! We have been over these many times! :-) But, one last time: It would have been quite easy for Peter to have written 'any of you' if that was what he meant to say. But, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he wrote that God does not want ANY to perish, but ALL to come to repentance. The phrase 'any of you' actually does occur in the following verses: Mt. 12:11, Lk. 14:33, Jn. 8:46, Acts 22:3, Acts 26:8, 1 Cor. 1:14, 1 Cor. 6:1, 2 Thess. 3:8, and James 1:5. The basic rule of interpretation and translation is that 'any' or 'all' are inclusive unless restricted in some way in the text itself. This is simply not the case in 2 Peter. So, the only reason to change the normal meaning of the term would be your doctrine, since there is nothing in the text which indicates that we should do so. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim, Just saying it is so, does'nt make it so. Verse 1 Paul calls his audience "beloved". 2 Pet 3:8 But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. The lord is patient toward WHO? YOU! who are "you"? In context, Paul is addresing you beloved" When he says "not willing that any to perish". There is no reason (except doctrine) to assume that, out of nowhere, Paul changes from an assurance of Christ's return to a universal assurance that God desires to save all men. If that was the case then Paul would be assuring the beloved that at the 2nd coming all men WOULD be saved. But as you have said: we have been down this road before. Merry Christmas Tim! John |

As always, I was following this issue and came across your writing. First, I assume that Peter has only one given name that is "Peter" and not "Peter Paul." Just kidding my friend ... because you kept on referring to the writer of 2Peter as Paul? Unless I'm wrong that actually it was Paul who wrote it. Well, I have a question for you in this verse: 2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward YOU, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance As you have said "YOU" refers to the beloved (in 2Pt. 3:8). I assume that these beloved are all Christians. My question is "Who are to perish if all the 'beloved' are Christians?" I assume these 'beloved' belongs to the 'chosen' ones. If none of the 'beloved' will perish, then who is God waiting for repentance? I assume those people who need repentance are not saved yet. Romans |

Merry Christmas Romans, Thanks for correcting my lapse on who wrote 2 Peter. (blush!) Peter Paul invented Almond Joy candy. :-) "If none of the 'beloved' will perish, then who is God waiting for repentance?" God is waiting for the last of His sheep to be brought into the fold. Then the end will come. Arminians and calvinists alike, agree that when the last person who will believe does believe, then the end of this age will come; Jesus will put all of His enemies beneath His feet. It is to those elect, chosen by God, that the pronoun "any" point to. John 10:28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. John 6:44,45 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, 'AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me. John |
