1 | What makes a tithe a tithe? | Matt 23:23 | willownanny | 225666
The Bible instructs us to tithe 10 percent of our income. As long as the tithe is used for the purpose of furthering the Gospel, does it matter by whom it is used? In other words, -- does the Bible indicate anywhere that this specific 10 percent is only considered a tithe if it is used to support an organized church? I would appreciate facts and/or opinions on this subject. Thanks and blessings to all.
2 | What makes a tithe a tithe? | Matt 23:23 | Makarios | 225667
Greetings Willownanny, This is largely a repost of #225573.. "Can a tithe to anyone outside of God and the church still be considered a tithe?" Scripture gives an example in Genesis 47:24-26 when the Israelites gave a one-fifth tithe to Pharaoh (and not to God). But most of the Biblical examples describe a tithe as giving to the LORD (Numbers 18:26). Scripture also indicates that it is not so important as to where the tithe goes (Deut. 14:22-23), but the condition of our hearts as we tithe: see Isaiah 1:13-19, Matthew 23:23, Mark 12:42, 1 Chronices 29:9, 2 Cor. 9:6-7. Therefore, the condition of our heart as we tithe is more important than where we actually contribute the tithe. But tithing to our fellow church brethren is shown in Scripture to be important (Acts 11:29; Romans 15:26; 2 Cor. 9:13). Blessings to you, Makarios |

3 | What makes a tithe a tithe? | Matt 23:23 | GaryArnold | 225678
No where in the Bible was anyone instructed to tithe on their income. God commanded a tithe on crops and animals which are assets that come from God's miraculous increase, not man's income. Leviticus 27:30-34.
4 | What makes a tithe a tithe? | Matt 23:23 | BradK | 225679
Hi Gary, You're making a very general statement. However, in the NT Paul refers to a principle of grace and a "cheerful giver" (2 Cor. 9:6-7) So, what are we to give and upon what basis are we to do so? Would you elaborate your view on giving? BradK |

5 | What makes a tithe a tithe? | Matt 23:23 | GaryArnold | 225680
The New Testament teaches generous, sacrificial giving, from the heart, according to our means. For some, one dollar might be a sacrifice, while for others, even giving 50 percent of their income might not induce a sacrifice. In the Old Testament, ONLY the farmers tithed, and it was equal percentage (a tenth). The New Testament teaches the principle of equal sacrifice instead of equal percentage. Equal sacrifice is much harder to achieve, if not impossible, than giving ten percent. I believe those led by the Spirit, and financially able, will give far more than a mere tenth of their income. |

6 | What makes a tithe a tithe? | Matt 23:23 | Beja | 225682
Gary, Some of what you said I agree with. Sacrificial giving is certainly in many cases more than a tithe. But where does scripture teach equal sacrifice? I admit, my first thoughts are that this sounds like twisting scripture to support left wing political notions. However, I hold off on that and ask whether you can support this from scripture in case I am wrong. I will happily be corrected by scripture. In Christ, Beja |
