1 | Septuagint quoted here in Matt 1:23? | Matt 1:23 | Huron | 142599
Is this a quote of the Septuagint? Anyone look into the "virgin" -vs- young lady issue regarding the translation of Isaiah 7:14? Thanks! Huron |

2 | Septuagint quoted here in Matt 1:23? | Matt 1:23 | Morant61 | 142617
Greetings Huron! Mt. 1:23 quotes the LXX word for word, except for one difference. In the LXX, Is. 7:14 says 'you (sing.) will call', while Mt. 1:23 says 'they (plural) will call'. The short answer concering the 'virgin' vs. 'young lady' issue is that the Hebrew word in Is. 7:14 could mean either, but the Greek word in Mt. 1:23 only refers to a virgin, not a young lady. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | How do we know Isaiah 7:14 was prophecy? | Matt 1:23 | Huron | 142664
Tim, Thanks for the succinct answer! While I see that knowing about the Septuagint clears up some issues, I have another question: How do we KNOW that the Isaiah prophecy was about the Messiah? When reading the verse from Isaiah in context, it seems to me that Isaiah is only addressing the king Ahaz and his immediate situation. Obviously, Matthew saw it as a prophecy and he was a Hebrew on the scene, so he has to be correct, but I have to admit that I'm a little puzzled. Regards, Huron |

4 | How do we know Isaiah 7:14 was prophecy? | Matt 1:23 | Morant61 | 142667
Greetings Huron! I'll try to give another succinct answer! :-) We don't that Is. 7:14 is a prophecy about Jesus because God tells us so in Mt. 1:22! ;-) Scripture is the best interpreter of Scripture. It is not unusual that prophetic passages have more than one fulfillment. Is. 7:14 was clearly addressing to a contemporary situation, which is why I have no problem with translating the Hebrew word as 'young woman'. However, Mt. 1:22 tells us that it had an even greater fulfillment in reference to Christ who would be born of, not just a young woman, but of a 'virgin'. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

5 | Isaiah 7:14/Matt 1:23 | Matt 1:23 | Huron | 142761
Tim, That certainly answers the question for me, but what would you tell someone who asked the same question BUT only believes the OT. Person in question believes the Messiah hasn't come yet, and that the NT was written by heretics. With that background information, how would you answer the question? |

Huron, I would have tem read Hebrews, which shows that the OT is incomplete without Christ. PRAYER is the key ... because they need to overcome the hurdle that blinds them in believing (John 12:37-41). Also, consider having a Messianic Jew talk with them ... for they can relate. Just some thoughts. Searcher |
