Bible Question:
Tim, Thanks for the succinct answer! While I see that knowing about the Septuagint clears up some issues, I have another question: How do we KNOW that the Isaiah prophecy was about the Messiah? When reading the verse from Isaiah in context, it seems to me that Isaiah is only addressing the king Ahaz and his immediate situation. Obviously, Matthew saw it as a prophecy and he was a Hebrew on the scene, so he has to be correct, but I have to admit that I'm a little puzzled. Regards, Huron |
Bible Answer: Greetings Huron! I'll try to give another succinct answer! :-) We don't that Is. 7:14 is a prophecy about Jesus because God tells us so in Mt. 1:22! ;-) Scripture is the best interpreter of Scripture. It is not unusual that prophetic passages have more than one fulfillment. Is. 7:14 was clearly addressing to a contemporary situation, which is why I have no problem with translating the Hebrew word as 'young woman'. However, Mt. 1:22 tells us that it had an even greater fulfillment in reference to Christ who would be born of, not just a young woman, but of a 'virgin'. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
