1 | genealogy from Exodus to Solomon | Matt 1:17 | DocTrinsograce | 207118 | ||
Hi, Zor... I believe that Matthew 1:17 says fourteen generations from Abraham to David, rather than from Abraham to Jesus. If we subtract six generations to get to Moses -- Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Levi, Kohath, and Amram -- then that leaves us with eight generations. Add one to get to Solomon, and you are left with nine. Wait a second... that's working down through the Levitical line. Keep that number of generations in mind, though, for it leads us back to Moses from Solomon. Working down, instead, through the Judaic line (per Matthew 1:3-6): subtract the four generations (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah), you get ten generations. That properly accounts for Phares, Esrom, Aram, Aminadab, Naasson, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, and David. Salmon was a contemporary of Joshua, who would be considered the next generation after Moses. Well, I think I've entirely confused us all! However, we shouldn't be surprised to see a different number of generations depending on the specific lineage you follow. (Generations don't always perfect chronology across a single family, let alone working down each of the tribes of a large group like the Israelites.) No doubt that accounts for the difference in your computations. Clear as mud yet? :-) In Him, Doc |
