1 | Unpardonable sin | Matt 12:32 | ngkh | 143802
I have read commentaries and discussions done in 2002 but I've still some questions and would appreciate some enlightening. 1) What constitute blasphemising the Holy Spirit (NIV and NKJV) ? 2) If a christian whose church do not believe in the speaking of tongues i.e. holy spirit, and thus to say that its not acceptable, will they fall under this category? My bro-in-law is in this church. 3) Does this verse not contradict the full Grace of the Lord? Even if you talk against Jesus Christ is still forgivable. 4) What if the person who does not understand the Holy Spirit and have talked bad about the Spirit. ( Would it be reasonable for a man who is not a believer or ignorant like the Pharisees to say that it is a demon instead? (Matthew 12:24)) 4) Would you say that man in general who do not understand but witness a miracle ( healing, exorcism) would normaly look at it in a negative manner (skeptics). Will skeptics then also fall under this category of unforgivable sin? Thus if a person who is a non believer then, argued that the Holy Spirit is utterly nonsence and crap but later repented and born again. No use? (damned for eternity) Thank you. |

2 | Unpardonable sin | Matt 12:32 | justme | 143811
ngkh: The unpardonable sin is not something a born again Christian can commit. The unpardonable sin is refusal to acknowledge God's power through the Holy Spirit convicting one of their need for Jesus Christ for salvation, and repentance and restoration to God. The unpardonable sin is deliberate and irrversible hardness of heart if this is the condition of the person at the time of their death. When someone rejects the Holy Spirit's pleading to acknowledge Jesus Christ and the gift of salvation, that is the only unpardonable sin that sends men or women to eternal life in hell. May I add John 1:9 "There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man." We know the Holy Father knows our heart, and nothing is hidden from Him. (Psalm 139) The belief in, or lack of belief in the use of Spiritual Gifts is a totally different issue, and is a "in house debate" within the Body of Christ. (Church) Not all of mature as Christians as fast and not everyone matures beyond basic salvation, this is sad but very true. The Grace you refer to is unmerited, there is nothing we can do to earn Grace, this is a gift. Please note I am not saying Grace comes without a high cost, as Grace cost Jesus Christ to die for the sins of all mankind. I hope this helps, however let me also mention that with my Baptist background I can aslo say with just this little dialogue you might see how I believe in eeternal security of the believer. For me this all fits together in my Theology. Blessings. justme |

Thank you for the sharing. Now Hank wrote that there has to be a "deliberate" for this sin because they knew about it and yet still talk against it while you felt that anyone who profess to have received salvation but rejects the Holy Spirit is guilty of this sin even though they may not have talked against it. My bro-in-law for e.g. a far longer and strong christian I believe with great faiths. The only thing that bugged me is when we talk about a charismatic church I am in, he does not or rather his church does not believe in speaking of the tongues as according to him the event happened only on the day of Pantecost. He did not condemn it either. When he once visited my church, he told me that I am in the right church. I don't know what his church preaches but I am concerned that he may be on the wrong footing which may lead him to commit an 'unpardonable sin' (no way back.) without realising it. Also like him, we also have thousands of believers who may not believe in the Holy Spirit worldwide. Does it mean that they are condemned for not believing in the Holy Spirit? And how would we minister this? I thought the Holy Spirit is sort of automatic as you walk with the Lord - (baptism of the holy spirit.) because of ones belief and faith. Matthew 3:11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Why would one believes in Christ and yet do not believe in the Holy Spirit? Again, if one who is not for the Holy Spirit will he also be against Christ? |

Scripture ... Mat 12:22-37, 28:19; Jhn 16:8-10; Act 2:38, 10:47 16:31; 1Co 6:19, 12:13; Eph 2:18-19 ... ngkh, greetings, Read the context of this verse (Mat 12:22-37). When we are saved we have the Holy Spirit (Act 2:38, 10:47; 1Co 6:19, 12:13; Eph 2:18-19) ... it is automatic. There is no subsequent part. Acts 16:31 and other passages tell us to believe in the Lord Jesus. Where are we told to believe in the Holy Spirit ... He convicts us (Jhn 16:8-10) and well as other things (read rest of this section in John). He is mentioned with the Father and Son (Mat 28:19). Searcher |

Hello, searcher. I agree with you that receiving the Holy Spirit is "automatic" when we are saved. You made an excellent reference to John 16, which describes the work of the Holy Spirit. Some people think of the Holy Spirit only in terms of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but we should emphasize the person of the Holy Spirit. As to whether there is a "subsequent part," please consider John 20:22 and Acts 1-2. In John 20:22, on the day the empty tomb was discovered, Jesus breathed on the disciples, saying, "Receive the Holy Spirit." They believed in Jesus as the Messiah and were saved. However, on another, later occasion, He told them that they would soon be "baptized with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:5). When the disciples were baptized with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, there was a supernatural manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit that was apparent to all who observed. I think that you would agree that this type of manifestation does not always occur when a person receives the Holy Spirit at salvation. I think that the source of ngkh's concern is whether a person, like his brother-in-law, who does not believe in the manifestion of the power of the Holy Spirit as observable gifts is in danger of committing the unpardonable sin. Jesus did not say that failure to believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit was the unpardonable sin, but that the unpardonable sin was _blaspheming_, or speaking against, the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31-32). From ngkh's description of his attitude, it appears that his brother-in-law respects both the person and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I would think that he would not be in danger of committing the unpardonable sin. I agree with others that committing the unpardonable sin is deliberate and reflects an unchangeable hardness of heart toward the truth of God and the salvation He has provided for us through Jesus. I would add that the Holy Spirit's role in this process is crucial and ought not to be denigrated whether the Holy Spirit's work is quiet and apparent only to the individual believer or whether it is so obvious that those affected appear to be drunk as in Acts 2:13-15. |
