1 | least in kingdom greater than John | Matt 11:11 | azurelaw | 207415 | ||
Dear france13, In reading your post 207395, it seems to me that you have your own answer as to your original question. However, I found those old saints have said aptly as to how to understand the verse. Here I quote from Matthew Henry: "...he that is less in that is greater than John. Some understand it of Christ himself, who was younger than John, and, in the opinion of some, less than John, who always spoke diminishingly of himself; I am a worm, and no man, yet greater than John; so it agrees with what John the Baptist said (Jn. 1:15), He that cometh after me is preferred before me. But it is rather to be understood of the apostles and ministers of the New Testament, the evangelical prophets; and the comparison between them and John is not with respect to their personal sanctity, but to their office; John preached Christ coming, but they preached Christ not only come, but crucified and glorified. John came to the dawning of the gospel-day, and therein excelled the foregoing prophets, but he was taken off before the noon of that day, before the rending of the veil, before Christ's death and resurrection, and the pouring out of the Spirit; so that the least of the apostles and evangelists, having greater discoveries made to them, and being employed in a greater embassy, is greater than John. John did no miracles; the apostles wrought many. The ground of this preference is laid in the preference of the New-Testament dispensation to that of the Old Testament." "Some understand it of Christ himself, who was younger than John, and, in the opinion of some, less than John, who always spoke diminishingly of himself; I am a worm, and no man, yet greater than John; so it agrees with what John the Baptist said (Jn. 1:15) I can't really understand this. Who said "I am worm" and where in Scripture? Mr. Henry states that it's "to be understood of the apostles and ministers." That's true if they ultimately attained to the kingdom (unlike Judas, for one). Verse 12 continues: "From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it." No one at the time Jesus uttered these words had been resurrected to heavenly life, so it applied equally to John the Baptist and and of Christ's disciples. |

france13 Psalm 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, A reproach of men and despised by the people. This is a referrence to Jesus by David in the long Psalm showing the suffering of Jesus at the cross. This verse in Mathew 11:11 "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.", clearly states that one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater that John the Bapist. Whoever that one is the scripture makes a difference between them and John the Baptist, so it cannot be referring to John the Baptist. I don't see how it could be referring to Jesus because Jesus is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, He is the king. That leaves the disciples of Jesus, all of them beyond the twelve. I believe that those who have the opportunity to come Jesus got into the kingdom on better promises as described in all of Hebrews, are those who are here in this verse, the one who is greater than John the Baptist. I think this verse is talking about the priveldge of the means by which on enters into the kingdom. How did John the Baptist get saved? By faith before Jesus came around, the same way Abraham, and Moses, and David did. But those who came into the kingdom of heaven after Jesus came around received the promises of a Messiah, a savior, a King, promises that those in the OT heard of but never saw. The Bible says those who are first shall be last, and those who are last shall be first. The people who all got saved under the OT were the first, the people who get saved under the NT were the last. John the Baptist was a very great man, but he comes from the first, regular folks who believed in Jesus and got in where the last. The first shall be last and the last shall be first. tumbleweed, God's Own |
