Gen 2:7: And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 1 Cor 15:45: And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Soul means the same in Hebrew and Greek: an animal or human; or the life of either. God told Adam after his sinning: In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. (Gen 3:19) Even if one disagrees with the Bible, that Adam received a soul rather than him being a soul, one has to ask where did the soul come from and what happened to Adam's? Did God leave out vital info to Adam's decision-making - I thought he said I would die, but now he tells me I'll be punished forever. Maybe I would have decided differently had I known that! Death is the opposite of life. There's no life in the dust. No where in the Bible does it say the soul is immortal. It says destruction is eternal - the second death is permanant. Hades will be thrown in the lake of fire, which signifies total destruction. Gehenna, the local garbage heap was treated with sulpher to keep stench minimal. But nothing living was thrown in Gehenna! And nothing was coming out because it was reduced to ashes. The only confusing thing to people is the word "torment," (Rev 14:11) and this is figurative. 2 Thes 1:9 and Eccl 9:5 and fundamental truths in which other verses must be understood, just like Gen 2:7. |
