1 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | stjohn | 211900
Sticking to Scripture and not speculation. As far as I know, Sheol has always referred to death or the grave. In the story of the Rich man and lazarus, as told by our Lord in (Luke 16:19-31) the Rich man (By the way he was still conscious) did indeed call out from the grave/death/sheol. And never in Scripture is it implied that we lose consciousness at death, on the contrary, Scripture says that the antipodal of this is true. I would not presume to presume that I knew what Jonah presumed from the belly of the great fish. Lets stick to the Scriptures. John |

2 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | Val | 211904
I have heard Dr. McGee say that research has proven that a man can live inside a large fish, whale I believe as they have a compartment in their stomach which contains enough oxygen for the person somehow to live. He said that Jonah's appearance was probably miraculous to the people of Ninevah and that helped his testimony to them. Being affected by the stomach acid of the stomach his appearance would be a testament to God's power. Although the bible doesn't say definatively if Jonah died there I have considered that God is able to raise men from the dead but I now have the opinion that Jonah did not die because he repented and the whale spit him out and Jonah continued the work the Lord had for him to do. Considering the passages that it is appointed for men once to die and then after that the judgement as well as the fact that one cannot repent after death and come back to life it would seem that these obvious passages would explain this difficult passage. I am sure Jonah had a lot of time to think in that dark smelly place for those three days. I think one fact of the story is that Jonah was to preach to a people that he actually hated. He did not want them to repent but wanted them to face judgement for the cruelty they imposed on their enemies in war. I think this is a great testament to those who think they have gone too far in sin and think there is no chance for them to be saved. Christ offers salvation to those who will repent and believe in Him. What a wonderful hope and healing for these types of people. It also sheds light on our attitudes and begs the question are there people Christ wants me to share the gospel with who I think should face judgment not redemption? Will I be obedient to proclaim the gospel to them?
3 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | stjohn | 211910
Sister Val, Indeed Scripture does say it is appointed for man to die once but there are many exceptions to this general rule. Many people have been raised from the dead Old and New Testament so Jonah's death and subsequent raising would not be a stretch by any means. By the way FYI McGee changed his view on this later on in his ministry, and said so on his thru the Bible radio show. John |

6 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | Val | 211928
John my friend, since you spoke that there is sufficient evidence to conclude that Jonah was dead I would like see your research, cross references, how they relate to Jonah and how you came to that conclusion, otherwise I would recommend that we agree to disagree. I have done an in-depth study of Jonah and from beginning to end I had questions regarding the text. I would not call that vacillating. That seems to be an insulting remark. Its is not a sin to disagree on difficult passages. It is a sin to attack a persons view and make insulting remarks. I know that is not what you meant. When making dogmatic statements the burden lies on the person to thoroughly explain their concluding statement with cross references, historical and cultural background and provide the consensus within the christian community for the statement. Dear Val, I'm sorry if my choice of words insulted you. You wrote: "I know what you mean I have changed my view back and forth too" The word "Vacillate" simply put, means to move from one position to another "back and forth". There is nothing derogatory about the usage of this word in the context in which it was used. If it came across as insulting to you I'm very sorry. Dogmatic? What part of "I think" is dogmatic? Val, I truly thought we were all just having a friendly discussion about this; if I came across as dogmatic or pushing my view, again, I am truly sorry. Val, I greatly appreciate your opinion and views on Scripture, and your post's have by and large all been very good, very thoughtful, and carefully done as far as I can tell, and I would not intentionally say something disparaging to you. On the contrary I'd be hard put to point to anyone who has had much more of a positive impact on this forum. As far as "proofs" no dear sister, Val, I cannot prove it, and I don't think I ever said that I could. Nether side can really be proven, but it is an interesting discussion, don't you think? :-) God bless John p.s. I'll do my best to dig up the MP3 with McGees statement, since you have seen fit to put this old man to task. :-) If I find it, I'll let you know. |
