Sin is the transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4). "Everyone who commits (practices) sin is guilty of lawlessness; for [that is what] sin is, lawlessness (the breaking, violating of God's law by transgression or neglect--being unrestrained and unregulated by His commands and His will" (AMPLIFIED 1 John 3:4 ) Are we unrestrained and unregulated by God's law? May it never be! The Law is not merely a bunch of rules. "The law of the LORD is perfect..." (NASB Psalm 19:7). A bunch of rules is the legalism practised and taught by the Pharisees. It is true that we are not under legalism. "For sin will not have authority over you; because you are not under legalism but under grace" Romans 6:14 Complete Jewish Bible. Romans 8:4 (ESV) says "in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled IN US, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit" (emphasis added). Notice it does not say "in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled FOR US." It says IN US, not FOR US. The penalty of sin was paid for us; but that does not give us license to continue to sin. The penalty for disobeying the Law was paid for us; but that does not give us license to disobey the Law. Nor does it mean that we automatically keep the Law. "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us" (1 John 1:8 ESV). " My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1 ESV). We cannot define sin apart from the Law. Sin is the transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4). If there's no such thing as the Law, then there is no such thing as sin. Sin has not ceased; the Law has not ceased. matt517 |

Hello kalos, Once again I've been grossly misunderstood. I agre fully with Paul: Romans 6:15 (ESV) What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! I'm not advocating a life of sin. I'm advocating freedom in Christ. Again from Paul: Romans 7:4,6 (ESV) Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. ...[6] But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit. Steve: I need to correct a misunderstanding, one that I am the cause of. When I made my previous post to you, it was not to correct you or disagree with what you had posted. I was merely taking the opporunity to post additional information on the subject. In no way did I think you were advocating a life of sin. Sorry for not being clearer in my post. Grace to you, kalos |
