Dear Lady, I wonder why, then, that God chose language to convey His Truth? It would have been simpler to skip language altogether, and just imbue it into people by the Holy Spirit. I do not disagree on your conclusion. The path by which you have arrived, however, reveals presuppositions that contain the seeds of gnostic heresies. The doctrine of inerrancy is rooted in the inspiration of the very words themselves. This is why Paul can base an entire doctrine on whether an OT word was plural or singular (Gal 3:16). This is why John even used the word "Word" so explicitly in his Gospel. (John even wrote his Gospel in response to the gnostic heresies that were looking to mystical origins for truth.) Although they take some learning to use, there are tools that can provide precious insights into the original text of the Scriptures. Consequently, you and I will not need to invest the years necessary to become literate in Greek and/or Hebrew. For example, I use a Strong's Concordance and Wine's Expository Dictionary of NT Words. Also, we can ask questions of those who've had the time, energy, and opportunity to learn the original languages. (We're blessed to have at least one of those on the forum!) I'm not trying to demean what you are saying, ma'am. I'm just trying to make a significant point, important to our doctrine of the authority of Scripture. In Him, Doc |

Doc, I don't think you're wrong, and I appreciate the input. I felt the time I spend learning another language, although I feel it would come easy to me, is time taken away from learning God's Word - which I would not want to do. Furthermore, I felt my pride would be benefitting more than my Bible study. And we all know what the Bible says about pride :o) I feel as long as one is using a version of the Bible which originated from a source which can be trusted, I believe it doesn't take learning in the original language in which the books were written in order to have Truth revealed to you. Especially as it is the Holy Spirit who reveals it - in any and all languages. No one should consider any one or any source "inerrant", that's why I John 4:1 tells us to measure everything we hear by the word of God. I think it WOULD be nice to know if a word in the original is masculine, feminine, plural or singular. I don't disagree, there may be precious insight to gain by reading the texts in the original languages. I may still choose to learn one or both, since I do enjoy learning new languages. However, I don't think it will necessarily reveal any more of God's Word to me. |
