Hi Ladyborg, I don't think that the other translations omit, this, it seems that they are simply translating this verse differently. Here is what A.R. Faussett writes: 2. leave but the sixth part of thee--Margin, "strike thee with six plagues" (namely, pestilence, blood, overflowing rain, hailstones, fire, brimstone, Eze 38:22 ); or, "draw thee back with an hook of six teeth" ( Eze 38:4 ), the six teeth being those six plagues. Rather, "lead thee about" [LUDOVICUS DE DIEU and Septuagint]. As Antiochus was led (to his ruin) to leave Egypt for an expedition against Palestine, so shall the last great enemy of God be. north parts--from the extreme north [FAIRBAIRN]. The Hebrew word is question is "shawshaw", which has been translated "leave the sixth part", it is the same word that is also translated "drive you on". So it's not omitted, it is translated differently, and why that is so, I don't know. These others may be more accurate translations. I'm still struggling through Greek class, Hebrew will have to wait a couple of years. :-) I hope this helps! Love in Christ Mark |

Chris, Thanks for the insight. You must be in seminary. Perhaps you can help me. I have been thinking of learning either Greek or Hebrew for a deeper understanding of the original texts. I am very good with languages, have 4 fluent ones under my belt, so-to-speak. If you know, what would you recommend. I'm sure I will do as good or bad in either, but don't know which would be more fulfilling (if either). If you have any insight on this I thank you for your response in advance. I'm not interested in preaching, I don't believe women should be preachers, this is only for personal gratification and study. Thanks, Lu |

Hi Lu, I'd say learn Hebrew, because we need a Hebrew expert around here! ;-) I have been blessed in being able to audit the Greek class at my previous church's Bible college. That is the only "formal education" I am currently undergoing. I can say that I am at the top of the class, however, we are only up to our first year first semester mid-term. I began with Greek for two reasons, one is that it seemed less alien than Hebrew, and the other that I am currently doing more indepth study of the New Testament than the Old. I intend to learn Hebrew, Lord willing, next. My suggestion to you would be to pray about it, learn the alphabets of each, and see which one you are more inclined to study. Let the Lord lead. You can also purchase "learn on you own" workbooks for Hebrew and Greek, which, while I don't know how effective they will be for actually learning the whole thing, will give you a taste without a major investment or commitment. On the radio show I listen to on my way to work this morning, (also by the pastor of my previous church), the preacher was talking about how he dug and dug, looking at a passage in Ephesians, examining the Greek, and got some good insights. He was pleased that he had "a working knowledge of Greek", and was able to learn these things. Then a lady in the congregation came up to share with him one day what she had got from the Lord in her reading. Wouldn't you know but it was the very same insight, from the very same verse! Truly it is the Spirit that teaches us. I know He will lead you to what is right, and will reward you for your diligence. God bless! Love in Christ, Mark |

Mark, thanks for the advice. I've decided to learn neither......it would take away from my Bible study time. | ||||||

That's like saying I don't have time to learn Spanish because I'm too busy studying an English translation of "Don Quixote". Grace to you, Kalos |

To quote Cervantes: "...this comes, not of any want of ability, but of too much indolence and too little knowledge..." Okay... I admit it is slightly out of context. But it was too good to pass up. :-) |
