Here is another good article on false prophets: http://thecripplegate.com/strange-fire-modern-prophecy/ Nathan Buesenitz gives the following tests for those claiming to be prophets: 1. Doctrinal orthodoxy: Because God is a God of truth, those who truly prophecy on His behalf proclaim doctrines that are right and true. (Deuteronomy 13:1–5; 2 Peter 2:1) 2. Moral integrity: God's true prophets are those who not only proclaim His truth, they also live out His truth. (Jeremiah 23:14-16; Matthew 7:20, 2 Peter 2:2-3) 3. Predictive accuracy: Because God knows the end from the beginning, a true prophet declares divine revelation regarding the future with 100 percent accuracy. (Deuteronomy 18:20-22; Jeremiah 28:9; Ezekiel 13:3-9) Buesenitz gives a number of modern day examples of false prophets. This is a very helpful article. Learn the Word and you will not be led astray. |

The article referenced does do an excellent job of defining false prophets but goes too far when it attempts to speak for all Charismatics/Continualist. I am a Pentecostal and I define false prophets exactly the way the article did. If someone prophesies and that prophecy is then proven false the person is a false prophet period, no exception. Likewise if someone says "I think/believe thus and such is going to happen" that is not prophecy and should not be required to conform to the same standard. Way too many people speak as if they are prophets and they are not. These people are deceived and need to be silenced. I have a major objection to the Strange Fire conference is that it tried to lump every form of errant and false theology into the Charismatic/Pentecostal camp. If you go the Assemblies of God website you can find white papers written condemning these falsehoods and half truths. There are many falsehoods being spread in this land but it is wrong to try to lump them together with orthodox but continuationalist simply because you are a cessationalist. |

Hi, EdB... I listened to the entire Strange Fire Conference (www.tmstrangefire.org). It included speakers such as R. C. Sproul, Steve Lawson, Conrad Mbewe, Tom Pennington, Phil Johnson, Joni Eareckson Tada, and others. I was actually surprised that they did not "lump every form of errant and false theology into the Charismatic/Pentecostal camp." Listen, for example, to Conrad Mbewe, who speaks about the horrific abuses occurring in the name of Christianity in Africa today. He explicitly asserts that he is distinguishing what is going on now from what he calls "traditional Pentecostalism." Tod Friel makes this careful differentiation as well. (To be honest, that surprised me, as my own tendency would have been to be much more sweeping.) However, when you witness the examples they are faulting, I do not think you will see anything with which the Assemblies of God might affirm, let alone identify. There's a whole new weirdness out there these days! By the way, I was looking at the ag.org website. I did not immediately see any papers on identifying false prophets. Would you please include a link here on the specific paper to which you were referring? I want to read it. If it has good stuff in it, I may also want to quote it in the forum. In Him, Doc |

Doc When I say the Strange Fire lumped everyone together I mean they included orthodox Pentecostalism with Word of Faith, with the bab it and grab it teaching, with God is your servant, name it and claim it, health wealth and prosperity teaching that is so common in many churches today. Also when I mentioned the AG has written papers about such abuses I meant they wrote about how the wrong the health wealth and prosperity gospel is. How all prophecy must be measured against scripture. They didn't need to write about how to detect a false prophet the subject is covered completely in scripture. Any prophecy that does not come to past is false. Any prophecy that is given for personal gain is false. Any prophecy that counters scripture is false. Any man that seeks Glory is false, God will not share His glory. A list of their position papers can be found at http://ag.org/top/Beliefs/Position_Papers/index.cfm |
