Tim All my classes in language convinced me of one thing, the translators of the Bible did a great job! I kind of chuckle when I hear people tell me how they study and find where the bible is translated wrong particularly in the Greek arena. Knowing my deficiencies in the Greek language I made friends really quick with a Greek Orthodox Priest whose native language is Greek. Every so often I go to him with a verse or paragraph I can’t figure out or feel something is missing and ask him what it means. He gets out his Greek Bible and explains the meaning to me. It usually is about the same but he is often able to add a warmth or color to the phrase that may otherwise be missing. He is far better than Robertson’s Word Pictures in that when I visit him, his wife usually feeds me some really great Greek pastries. Besides his openness and honesty humility is so very refreshing. :-). There are times when he stumbles around trying to find the right words. Usually he frustrates himself asks what my Bible says and when I read it his face brightens up and he says, “yea that what it means.” I joke with him that he is the Greek and he is suppose to be telling me what it says. He explains on the really difficult passages he sometimes can’t think of a satisfactory word since there is no real direct equivalent. He feels this is where the Bible translators did an excellent job. Like I said it is all Greek to me unless it is Hebrew! :-) EdB |

2 | Why was Jesus named “Jesus”? | Is 7:14 | Hank | 25999
Ed, I like your story about your experiences with your friend, the Greek Orthodox Priest....... I don't believe one gets to be a translator on the team of fine versions such as the the NASB or NKJV by taking a crash course in Hebrew or Greek -- something like "Greek Made Simple" or "Learn Greek in Only 15 Minutes a Day". These people who work on serious Bible translations aren't amateurs or hacks. They are seasoned and well-trained scholars who have a high view of Scripture. Consequently, to accuse them of manipulating Scripture to distort its meaning to suit their own agenda or mind-set is both ridiculous and ignorant, casting far more doubt on the credibility of the accuser than of the translators. --Hank

Right, Ed. Most of us do know that. But to the chosen few who don't, or insist on arguing the point, I dedicate my previous post :-) --Hank
