Bible Question: Why was Jesus named “Jesus” in the New Testament and not “Immanuel” as quoted from the Old Testament? I don’t know if this is a dumb question but I noticed this reading Matthew 1:21 (Jesus) and verse 23 (Immanuel). |
Bible Answer: Jesus is from the Greek Iesous, which is from the Hebrew 'Jehoshua' (or just 'Joshua') which means "Jehovah is salvation". This is the name the angel told Mary to give her son (Mat 1:21, Luk 1:31) Immanuel, although a name of Isaiah’s son, the Brown-Driver-Briggs' Hebrew Definitions has: Immanuel - "God with us" or "with us (is) God" 1) symbolic and prophetic name of the Messiah, the Christ, prophesying that He would be born of a virgin and would be ‘God with us’ Based on this Jesus (or Joshua) was his name, Immanuel was his title.
