Bible Note: Greetings Ed! That's a great resource to have at your disposal! :-) Translation is very difficult. Think about the steps that one has to go through in order to translate a passage (in reverse order). 1) One has to know the receptor language. 2) One has to understand the grammar of the original language. 3) One has to know the meanings of words in the original language. The third step is the one where the average person needs the most help. I can pretty well read the Greek NT (Hebrew, I can barely make out the words I've forgotten so much), but I don't have the resources or time to go back and research how a word was used throughout history. So, I have to depend upon a dictionary or lexicon. This is why I get a kick out of people who simply use a concordance and start telling everyone how the translators are wrong. Words can be very fluid in meaning. It takes much more than a concordance to understand the meanings. Don't eat to many pastries my friend! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
