1 | Why was Jesus named “Jesus”? | Is 7:14 | EdB | 25949
Tim All my classes in language convinced me of one thing, the translators of the Bible did a great job! I kind of chuckle when I hear people tell me how they study and find where the bible is translated wrong particularly in the Greek arena. Knowing my deficiencies in the Greek language I made friends really quick with a Greek Orthodox Priest whose native language is Greek. Every so often I go to him with a verse or paragraph I can’t figure out or feel something is missing and ask him what it means. He gets out his Greek Bible and explains the meaning to me. It usually is about the same but he is often able to add a warmth or color to the phrase that may otherwise be missing. He is far better than Robertson’s Word Pictures in that when I visit him, his wife usually feeds me some really great Greek pastries. Besides his openness and honesty humility is so very refreshing. :-). There are times when he stumbles around trying to find the right words. Usually he frustrates himself asks what my Bible says and when I read it his face brightens up and he says, “yea that what it means.” I joke with him that he is the Greek and he is suppose to be telling me what it says. He explains on the really difficult passages he sometimes can’t think of a satisfactory word since there is no real direct equivalent. He feels this is where the Bible translators did an excellent job. Like I said it is all Greek to me unless it is Hebrew! :-) EdB |

Greetings Ed! That's a great resource to have at your disposal! :-) Translation is very difficult. Think about the steps that one has to go through in order to translate a passage (in reverse order). 1) One has to know the receptor language. 2) One has to understand the grammar of the original language. 3) One has to know the meanings of words in the original language. The third step is the one where the average person needs the most help. I can pretty well read the Greek NT (Hebrew, I can barely make out the words I've forgotten so much), but I don't have the resources or time to go back and research how a word was used throughout history. So, I have to depend upon a dictionary or lexicon. This is why I get a kick out of people who simply use a concordance and start telling everyone how the translators are wrong. Words can be very fluid in meaning. It takes much more than a concordance to understand the meanings. Don't eat to many pastries my friend! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | Why was Jesus named “Jesus”? | Is 7:14 | EdB | 26000
Tim Your right he is a great resource and such a beautiful person. He was a very high in the Greek Orthodox church when he yielded to the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues. Needles to say when church authorities got wind of it things began to happen. He was ordered to Boston to stand before a heresy trial. He was ordered to recant which he refused so they removed him from his church. He took a major financial hit to stand for what he believed. A small group of his old parishioners and him meet very Sunday and have a Pentecostal Greek orthodox service. It is great! EdB |
