Hi fborn, I know that you don't always put your posts in ALL CAPS; so I don't know if you are shouting at me or not. :) One of the Scriptures that is alluded to in your post is John 5:18, "For this cause therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God." We should not think that we can be equal with God. Jesus was God's Son; we are only adopted sons. Personally, I go with the NASB for Isaiah 33:6. Yet, I go with the NKJ for Isaiah 33:10, "Now I will rise," says the Lord; "Now I will be exalted, Now I will lift Myself up." From the heart, Ray |

In regard to the Lord lifting Himself up, there are two other places where the context and the translation will allow His being lifted up. 1) Isaiah 33:3, NASB, 1995, "At the sound of the tumult peoples flee; At the lifting up of Yourself nations disperse." Isaiah 33:3, NKJ, "At the noise of the tumult the people shall flee; When You lift Yourself up, the nations shall be scattered." I personally would go with the extra pronoun of the NKJ. 2) Isaiah 33:2, NASB, 1977, "O Lord, be gracious to us; we have waited for Thee. Be Thou their [Some versions read our] strength every morning, Our salvation also in the time of distress." Isaiah 33:2, NKJ, and 1995 NASB, "Be their strength every morning, Our salvation also..." I would go with the extra pronoun of the 1977 NASB with perhaps a modern rendering of the 'You' such as, "May You be their [our] strength every morning, Our salvation also in the time of distress." This is all related to the "who or what is the stability of our times?" Any comments or observations? From the heart, Ray |

Hi Ray, I will apologize in advance for answering a question with a question. I have seen you pick and choose from a variety of translations, selecting one over the other, because of pronouns. Do you do this based on textual evidence of which is the closer translation to the original? Or do you do this based on which translation conforms to a pattern of pronoun usage? Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Mark, Thank you for your interest. I am not knowledgeable in Hebrew nor Greek to any great degree. I do not have access to textual evidence nor knowledge of all the manuscript choices. I do believe that the translators need to be more consistent in their inclusion of pronouns from book to book or in Paul's letter to letter. For instance, in the NKJ 1 Timothy 6:16 reads, "...to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen." The same Greek pronoun reads "To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!" in the NKJ for 2 Timothy 4:18. I believe that they can be more consistent in their translating. The NASB has "To Him be the glory" in both cases of 1 and 2 Timothy. I personally have chosen "to whom be the glory" for both cases. :) So I would hope that the translators would conform to a more consistent pattern of pronoun usage. 1) Now there are also recurring "patterns" that I have noted in my particular study method. These will influence some of my choices. For instance whether to capitalize "Light" in 1 Timothy 6:16. Or whether to seek a consistent usage in the Scriptures of "who alone" or "the only One" who possesses immortality. I hope this helps you understand where I am coming from. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Ray, So you are choosing according to which reading makes more sense to you, considering the context, and the pattern of pronoun usage in other passages by the same writer? Perhaps also with a consideration towards standardizing punctuation and grammatical patterns? If the answers to these questions are yes, then yes, I do understand better where you are coming from. Thank you! Love in Christ, Mark |

7 | The fear of the Lord is his treasure? | Is 33:6 | Hank | 151418
Hi, Mark. Meet a simpleton. Me! I'm one among a vast number of other simpletons who is quite willing to defer to the superior knowledge, wit, and wisdom of capable scholars who devote their lives to translating Scripture from its original tongues into English and other contemporary languages. Accordingly, I've lived 70 years thus far without allowing myself to become side-tracked from the message of Scripture by becoming obsessed with minor aspects of the medium, i.e., capitalization and pronouns. How easy it is to let the trees obsure our clear view of the forest. Blessings and best wishes. --Hank

Hi Hank, I notice the title of this thread refers to treasure. To me, treasure is being able to sit down and read my Bible, without filters, without second guessing, just taking in the Word of God, opening myself up to be changed by the mighty power of His Holy Word! To be sure, I spend time examining a paragraph, a verse, a word, and God gives me treasure there too. But there's nothing like just reading and reading, and letting the Holy Spirit move in me. The Word of God is alive! Love in Christ, Mark |
