1 | Man's understanding is not always God's | Prov 21:2 | EdB | 233624
Bradk In answer to your first question yes it is usually doctrine that divides but doctrine is birthed in theology. So I believe the ultimate failure is the theology that developed the doctrine. On point two ultimately it is our sin nature that causes our division. We pridefully try to explain what God has not revealed or we try to play Monday morning quarterback and couch what God really said by something that seems right with us. However I do disagree with your last point. In response to the accusations of division of denomination it has been commonly said "we agree on majors and disagree on minors." That is a feeble attempt to justify our pride and downplay any division. Fact disagreement causes division no matter if it is disagreement on majors or minors becasuse what is minor to you may me major to me. Example I can not see how for example an anti abortionist (some may say this is a non essential or a minor) can walk in any harmony with a person that believes in abortion. Can't happen. Both can agree in the need for salvation (major or core doctrine as you call them) but both believe they know the "real" requirements to achieve that salvation. Both can't be right and that difference says there must be a division. |

Hello Ed, Forgive me, but I'm hearing a lot of generalities in rgards to divisions. How do you see that we propose to bridge this gap of division? What are the solutions? With regard to someone who supports abortion, I'd have to say that this persons(s) does not fully understand what scripture teaches. They've failed to adapt a biblical theology. By that, I mean that popular culture has played a significant role in shaping our theology, rather than the reverse. The Church has tended to adopt what "Culture" says is right instead of what Scripture teaches. Ultimately, they (we) don't have a high view of the Bible and view it as authoritative! 3 | Man's understanding is not always God's | Prov 21:2 | EdB | 233630
How do we fix it? First we have to admit there is a problem and in light of John 17:22-23 (NASB) 22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. And in the way the world (unsaved) sees Christianity we have to admit there is a problem if the truth is really in us. Then we have to discern what really separate us. We know scripture does not contradict itself so if there is a separation based on scripture we must first conclude it's existence is false and force ourselves in light of Jesus' prayer to resolve the problem. I would say that would be a good beginning. Actually with the exception of some current interests such as abortion and homosexuality and few others most of what separates us is based on not on society but rather on the "learned" study of people who claim to have a high view of the Bible and certainly claim it's authority. |
