1 | why the one when not the other | Gen 2:9 | GBzones | 206364
Why was there a tree of life to which before they ate of the other tree they had free access to; but after they had none "less they LIVE FOREVER in thier sin" Because if they had not eaten of the other they would never had died. This is not a question of unbelief.Or sceptism. But rather to provoke thought. |

2 | why the one when not the other | Gen 2:9 | Barach | 206365
If you read Gen 2:9, it would appear that these two trees were available to Adam and Eve. With plenty of food, there was no reason to eat of the 'tree of knowledge of good and bad'. But they did - after being tempted by the serpent (Satan) - because they desired something that didn't belong to them. After doing that, they weren't permitted to partake of the tree of life. The tree [all by] itself didn't provide eternal life, only God can do that (Rev 2:7). Hope this helps.
3 | why the one when not the other | Gen 2:9 | GBzones | 206368
Thankyou for you answer. But I dont think you have understood the question. if they had NOT eaten of the tree of the knowldge of good and evil and that was Gods will then they would never had died. Why then a tree of life? that clearly in one way or the other gave eternal life for if they had ate of it then they would have lived for ever.for that is what the scriptures say. gerald |

GBzones Apparently according to Genesis 3:22 Then the Lord God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat and live forever", it seems if one ate from that particular tree one would indeed live forever. I see your question here - Why put the tree of life in there, when clearly the other does give eternal life? What is most interesting to me about this is that God did say that Adam and Eve could have eaten of any tree of the garden, just not the tree of the knowledge of good and evil becuase they would surely die. What is implied here which is not so clearly seen is that they did have the right to eat of the tree of life and thereby live forever! But for some ungodyly reason it never occurred to Adam and Eve to go eat of the tree that would have made them live forever, they just mossied on through the garden eating fruit and vegetables and gave no thought to living forever, as if this was of no concern at the time for them. And indeed it was not as death did not enter in until they fell, so perhaps they had no need of the good gift of eternal life from the tree of life because they already had it. So, back to your question - Why a tree of life? No one can say for sure why God did that, only He knows. The only thing I could surmise is that God left them a choice of what to do, do what He said which included eating from the tree of life, which they could have done at any time, or to disobey and eat from the tree of good and evil that caused death. One thing that puzzles me is about Eve thinking that somehow disobeying would not result in what God said and that it would make her "like God", when the closest she was ever going to come to being like God would have been to continue living forever by either obeying, or eating of the other tree and living forever. The other interesting thing is that it did not occur to Adam and Eve to go eat of the tree of life after falling and being condemned to death, even though they now knew of good and evil, they did not seek to remedy death before God took that remedy away from them. About God's will there, I think that it is entirely possible that God wants all His creations to choose to worship and obey Him and always leaves the option open for them to excersize limited free will to do so, or to reject Him. No one can resist irresistable grace, that is not what I would say at all. But God knew before he made man that man would fall and planned accordingly from eternity past to rectify our mistake. Only God knows why, theologians have trying to figure out several unanswerable questions of this type without any sucess. I think you have hit on one of these things. I find your posts thus far most engaging and look forward to more studying with you. blessings abound, bowler |

5 | why the one when not the other | Gen 2:9 | GBzones | 206415
Thankyou for your answer.I was very carefull in the way I asked the question.I did not say they had eternal life.I said that they would not have died.I agree that they had the perfect liberty to eat of the tree of Life. Thus had the liberty to do good. But God gave them no liberty to do evil. Thus when men sin they come into bondage. I dont think they did not eat of the tree of life because they did not think of it but perchance that felt no need or were not hungry for it seeing that they had life already with no death. I do not beleive that had eternal life .I beleive they had life. I beleive there is an answer as to the why. Eve came to think as she did because she had not only accepted the words of the devil by the mouth of the serpent as to the bad character of God keeping good from them(so it is implied)by so doing opened the door to rejecting also Gods words by which she lived. For man shall not live by every tree that is good to eat but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. By rejecting the truth as to what was good and what was evil. Her "understanding was darkened"and her perceptions were blinded as to the true nature of the tree. Thus she SAW that the tree was GOOD to eat and REASONED thus "It would make her wise" If they had ate of the tree of life after they had sinned then they wouod have lived for ever in rebellion against God and in sin. I dont believe they had a limited free will. what sort of liberty is that? Liberty surely is not to be able to do evil. God gave them the liberty that He had. You CAN resist iristable grace. For the grace of God came by Jesus Christ. "If I be lifted up I will draw ALL men unto me" When God said to Adam what was good to eat and what was evil to eat and gave them no liberty to do evil for in the day ye do ye shall surely die. he revealed HIS ETERNAL WILL that man should live and not die. Thus he sent Jesus into the world according to His eternal will .Thus to resist Gods will means you love death more than life. To resist the cross means you reject the Word of GOD THE BLOOD of Christ and the Will of God. What hope then is there for a man if he rejects the mercy of God ?There is but the wrath and judgement of God. Thus to resist the iristable you bring destruction upon your self. and seeing that we now have IREFUTABLE proof as to Gods will and goodness not withholding even His own Son.To thus deny the irefutable is to bring damnation upon your own head. God did not plan to rectyfy our mistake. But even from the begining had HIS WILL and from the moment He said "let there be light" That eteranl will and purpose has been progresievly unfolding even untill now and will do so even unto the end. You cannot worship God with a limited free will. But only in Spirit and in truth. Gerald |
