1 | The bible is a work of fiction - discuss | Gen 1:1 | chimaera | 15576
Ok I have a fair few posts to reply to, may not get them all but here goes. 1) Please do not try and mock me, make me look stupid or indicate that because you beleive in god you are above me, either in intelligence, morals, or worth. Making fun of a TYPO makes you look childish and ignorant. I mistype "freind" all the time, doesn't mean I don't know how to spell it. Also, my name is not supposed to be funny or clever. Look up it's definition some time, Mr Big Words Make Me Look Clever. 2) Don't simply post copy and pasted passages from the bible, that means nothing to me. Use your own fingers and brain to give a response. 3) I did not post just to be inflammatory. It may have come out like that because I was having a particularly bad day and I was irritated and the whole religion thing, and the negative affect is has on my life. 4) Just so you know, on a side note, I was confirmed when I was younger, did bible classes, went regularly to church etc. So do not assume I am making uneducated comments. 5) I have a genuine interest in knowing why people beleive. Admittidly this is for slightly selfish reasons. My girlfriend, who I am very serious about, is a devout Christian. She has indicated, although not said outright, that my non-beleif may come between us. If not now, in the future. It angers me that someone's beleif should stop them living a long and happy life together. I have morals, I live by society's rules, I know right from wrong, I am a VERY good person (so I have been told). I just happen to beleive in evolution, science, and that we hold our own fate in our hands. If that makes me a bad person (who will supposedly burn in hell for all of eternity) then tell me why? |

well Chimaera, the reason any person goes to hell has nothing to do with being a good or bad person, it has to do with accepting Christ or not, so in direct amswer to your why question, lack of belief in Christ

I disagree. Going to hell has everything to do with being a bad person. --Joe! |

the bible teaches that we are all bad people ie sinners, but it also teaches that we can goto heaven even so, not because we cease to be bad people but because the price for our badness, or sin, was paid, so, a bad person goes to heaven if they accept christ, everyone who does goto heaven will have been a bad person in this life, unless of course that verse about all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God is a lie,

I agree with everything you say here. And all those who will be in hell deserve to be there for being bad people. So it has everything to do with being a bad person. --Joe! |

actually it has to do with whether or not accepted christ, after all those who goto heaven also deserve hell, if being a bad person sent us to hell there would be no human in heaven, but we know some of us will goto heaven, even though we are bad people the reason one goes to hell is for denying christ, think about it if being bad people is the basis for going to hell, we would all go to hell, I maintain, based on biblical principles that being a good or bad person doesnt get us into or outof hell, but rather the redemptive work of christ |

You wrote: "actually it has to do with whether or not accepted christ" That is what determines whether one is FORGIVEN of their sins or not. Nevertheless, the ones who will be suffering in hell for all eternity will be suffering for the sins they have committed: "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." --John 8:28 You wrote: "even though we are bad people the reason one goes to hell is for denying christ" Read Romans 1:18-22. What brings God's just wrath upon human beings? Rejecting Christ? Not initially. It is our rejection and rebellion of God the Father (i.e. our sin, our violation of God's law) that puts us under His wrath and curse. The additional sin of rejecting Christ just compounds the wrath further. "think about it if being bad people is the basis for going to hell, we would all go to hell" In a redemption-less universe, we would all go to hell for being bad people, yes. Because of Christ's sinless life and substitutionary death, those who belong to him WILL NOT get what they deserve for their sins. Those who do not belong to him, however, WILL get what they deserve for their sins. People bound for hell have earned hell. Those going to heaven have not earned heaven. "Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die." --Ezekiel 18:4 You wrote: "I maintain, based on biblical principles that being a good or bad person doesnt get us into or outof hell, but rather the redemptive work of christ" How does the redemptive work of Christ get anyone into hell? This is an important issue, because it has to do with how a Christian answers the skeptic's challenge: "How could you believe in a God who is so cruel as to say that just because I do not believe in Jesus that I am going to hell?" I reply that all of us were under God's wrath before conversion (Ephesians 2:3), before we even add Jesus to the equation. Jesus gets some sinners OUT of hell, but that does not mean that being a bad person doesn't get us into hell. It is the ONLY thing that gets anyone into hell. --Joe! |
