1 | Did God created people before Adam | Gen 1:1 | The Berean | 48177
Hello marg, that is a pretty good questions. I have heard that before. Some folk refer to Genesis 1:24-26 and Genesis 2:5-9. The reason being that the creation order is reversed. In Genesis 1 the animals came first then Adam and Eve, but in Chapter 2 it is Adam and Eve who are created first then the animals. So the possibility could be endless. But when you test the Bible with other parts of scripture, Adam was the first created. All those who responded to this question please provide more input if possible, for myself, marg and others as well. We need to be able defend the Word of God at all angles. Apologetics I think is one of our weakest areas in our walk. I Love this web site. Peace. MJ |

The Berean: Perhaps it is verse 19 of Genesis 2 that is leading you to conclude that the creation order is reversed between Chapters 1 and 2. There was really only one creation and the account of Genesis 2 is a continuum of the account in Genesis 1. Genesis 2:19 says, "Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them...." So a casual reading, out of context, WOULD seem to indicate in this passage that man was created before the animals. But we know that if this is so Chapter 1 is wrong. So how is one to exegete this troublesome verse, i.e., 2:19? Here is one way suggested by the Believer's Bible Commentary, Art Farstad, ed., (Thomas Nelson): "Hebrew has only two tenses (plus participles): perfect and imperfect. Context determines the precise verb form that is best in translating into English. Verse 19 is clearer with the English pluperfect tense: 'The Lord God HAD formed...every beast,' i.e., before He made man." A number of other commentaries agree essentially on this exegesis of the verse also. Has this helped you in your understanding of the [so-called] two creation accounts? Hank
3 | Did God created people before Adam | Gen 1:1 | The Berean | 48229
Thanks I understand clearly. I have just shown all of us and Marg that translations can be misleading without knowledge of language usage and translations from language to language. There are numerous translations of the Bible and anyone of them can give us a different meaning if we aren't careful in our studies. Which probably explains a lot of questions on this website. Take for instance the usage of Land and Earth in verse 5 of Chapter 2. Using Earth gives us the impression of all animals on the planet, while Land could imply that only particular animals on a certain square footage, i.e. farm. Also God created the earth and heavens in a span of two days. Yet it in verse 4 of Chapter 2 it says "in the DAY that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens." Now some folks would think hey I thought they were made in two days not one? But to add even further to the challange, 2 Peter 3:8 says that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. Now some would say okay is that a parable or is it literal? So for us all it is important that we not only know what we believe but why we believe. Most believers do not have a strong command of language structure and so forth, which is why excellent resources like the Strong's Concordance and beleivers such as yourself Hank (as Iron Sharpens Iron)are necessary. Thanks for your imput. |

4 | Did God created people before Adam | Gen 1:1 | Emmaus | 48256
Berean. I am not sure if the format I am trying to type this in with translate to the forum format. But here is something to consider. Try looking at Genesis 1 this way. Prologue 1:1 God is Day 1 1:3-5 Day 4 1:14-19 Light and darkness Fixed lights for day and night Day 2 1:6-8 Day 5 1:20-23 Firmament, waters Birds above, fish below above and below Day 3 1:9-13 Day 6 1:24-31 Dry land Animals and man on land Day 7 2:1-3 Epilogue God rests The summary of creation before the more detailed account of man's creation has a logical structure. On days 1, 2 an 3 regions are created. Regions of light and dark, the firmament with waters above and below with the air between, dry land. On days 4,5 and 6 the inhabitants of the regions are created, starting with the fixed objects sun, moon and stars, birds and fish, land animals and man. The vegetation is created with the earth because it does not have the same freedom of movement as the other living creatures. There is clearly a hierarchical order of creation indicated. But Genesis 1 is a sumary. Gensis 2 gets into the specifics of God's most important and highest creation, man. Emmaus |
