1 | How old is the earth scripturally? | Gen 1:1 | Daninjapan | 4246
The previous answer reflects a position taken by a number of Christians, but there are other perfectly respectable views on this issue as well. It is perfectly possible to interpret Genesis 1 and 2 in a way that allows for the earth to be billions of years old without violating the integrity of Scripture. In fact, it is very likely that the majority of Christians interpret Genesis 1 in a way that allows for an old earth. The fact is, the Bible does not tell us how old the earth is, but instead presents creation in a way that can be interpreted to indicate a young earth or an old earth depending on the assumptions that you bring to the text. I believe that God deliberately chose to leave the age of the earth unrevealed in the text so that the it would not have to be a stumbling block to the many different cultures that the Bible ahs to communicate to. Dr Hugh Ross, Reasons to Believe Ministries, gives an excellent defense of his interpretation of Genesis which leads to an old earth perspective. I would suggest that interested parties consider the writings of Dr Hugh Ross and other old earth supporters carefully before assuming that the Bible teaches that the earth is "young". In any case, the most important thing to take away from Genesis 1 is that God created the heavens and the earth from nothing as a sovereign act of His will - thus displaying His power and glory and showing us that we are beholden to Him and dependent on Him for all things. Genesis 2 then reveals to us how we have fallen into a sinful state and shows us that without a new and special work by God salvation is impossible. The rest of the Bible tells us how God has provided salvation through Jesus Christ and shows us how to accept Jesus through faith. |

2 | How old is the earth scripturally? | Gen 1:1 | Phillip | 4312
There is an important difficulty regarding the Gospel as to the assumption of an Earth of millions or billions of years old. The Bible is clear that death did not enter into the world until after sin. Rom 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned -- In the case of an old Earth, there could have been no death for m's or b's of years while the Earth was being formed. That would mean that the theory of evolution and the Bible cannot both be true as evolution contends that there has been death for m's and b's of years. That would also mean that God did not create Heaven and Earth in 6 days as He said He did. Ex 31:17 "It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed." I am not prepared to call God a liar. Heb 6:18...in which it is impossible for God to lie, The only possibility for a different assumption would be that Adam lived in the Garden of Eden for m's or b's of years before the fall. My question to that is why would God take m's and b's of years for the Earth to evolve and only one day to create all of the solar system or all of the fish or animals? Since the Bible says that Adam brought sin and death into the world after the seventh day of creation, there could not have been death before that. Jesus died for the sins of the world from Adam on and not before. If you change the account of Genesis to fit man's account of creation, you will also have to change the Gospel. 3 | How old is the earth scripturally? | Gen 1:1 | JonnyRay49423 | 4328
The earth is six to seven thousand old. The Bible does not give the idea the earth is billions or millions of years old. Genesis chapters 1 and 2 clearly teach God made the earth and man in six days and rested on the seventh day. |
