1 | Lot righteous? | Gen 19:8 | jholler | 186320
How is it that Lot was considered righteous before God when he was willing to give up his own virgin daughters to be raped? I believe this is a little far to extend hospitality...

Greetings jholler and welcome to the forum. I suppose the first thing to be considered, in order to answer your question, would be your rendition of what it means to be righteous since the Bible doesn’t make any mistakes. 2 Tim. 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; There may be more to the question about Lot then what meet the eye. Bringing it a little closer to home or ,shall I say, more up to date, what in your estimation would cause a person to be considerer righteous by God now days; then we can get back to Lot? I hope you enjoy the forum, CDBJ |

Thanks, CDBJ, but I think you've actually made me more aware of the root of my own question...what standards of "righteousness" applied in THAT day, that this offer was neither condemned, nor even mentioned, by the Angels Lot was seeking to protect? If Lot recognized them to be angels, he would have known there would be no need for him to do any protecting...so, assuming that he was unaware of their true nature, as a man of God, and apparently the only one in town, why would giving his own daughters away be his first choice of action to protect two strangers?

That’s all rather problematic but what happened to the question of righteousness, or is that one you would rather skip at this point? What would one have to do today to be as righteous as Lot? CDBJ |

"What would one have to do today to be as righteous as Lot?" Not sure I understand your reasoning for this question, nor the type of answer you are looking for...is this a generic sunday school, discussion provoking, try to wake them up cause the coffee and donuts ain't working question? Are you trying to bait me into saying something that will give you an opportunity to say something you need only an opening for? ebrain has given me insight closer to what I am looking for...what I understand from this passage is that no matter how much of a cowardly lowlife one is, there is always a chance that God will preserve you long enough to realize it and ask forgiveness. This also applies to my question regarding Abraham and Isaac's apparent prioritization of self-security over the well being of their wives. |

I'm just keeping it simple and ask why was lot righteous in the first place? Someone suggested that with his loose hand on his children that he shouldn’t be regarded as unrighteous, and I wondered why. CDBJ
