1 | Holy Spirit or wind, breath, spirit? | Ps 51:3 | Ray | 116140
I have been considering Psalm 51:11 and Ezekiel 36:27 tonight and have "penciled in" some changes to my own personal copy. I wonder if you would consider putting Holy Spirit in lower case? Psalm 51:11, "Do not cast me away from Thy presence, And do not take Thy *holy *spirit from me." What I am considering is that "presence" and "holy spirit" and "salvation" would be more connected if spirit was in lower case. In other words, "Thy presence", "Thy holy spirit", and "Thy salvation". 2) Ezekiel 36:27, "And I will put My *spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances." What I am considering here is that verse 26 speaks of a new heart and a new spirit within you, so a continuing with "My spirit within you" would make sense. Ezekiel 37:14, NASB, "And I will put My Spirit [marginal note, Or, breath] within you, and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land." Here, with the incorporation of "breath" instead of "Spirit" we would be consistent in our usage of "spirit within you". What are your thoughts on the above? From the heart, Ray |

2 | Holy Spirit or wind, breath, spirit? | Ps 51:3 | Mommapbs | 116151
Greetings Ray, After reading John 14:16,17 and 26 it makes sense to me to keep both Ez 36:27; 37:14 with Spirit. IMO this reference alludes to the passage in John. As far as Psalm 51:11 goes, if David is connecting God's presence with recognition of His Spirit, why lower s? Blessing, mommapbs |

3 | Holy Spirit or wind, breath, spirit? | Ps 51:3 | Ray | 116169
Hi Mommapbs, My question here is a reposting of a question that I originally asked of John Pilgrim, #114917. It was part of the thread that Sir Pent started, #113288, under the question "Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit?" With that question in mind, I can not connect the new heart and new spirit of Ezekiel 36 with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of John 14. The Holy Spirit could not be yet because Jesus was not yet glorified. Jesus said that He "abides with you, and WILL BE in you." What I say is that it is Christ in us that is the hope of glory. Because we are sons, He indwells us. He tells us to be filled with the spirit. The Old Testament believers were given God's spirit. They walked in His statutes and He was their God. 1) I have come to believe that it would be too confusing for our God to have put the conflicting phrases of a new spirit within you and My Spirit within you this close together. So I go with "new heart, new spirit within you" for verse 26 and "My spirit within you" for Ezekiel 36:27 and "My breath within you" for Ezekiel 37:14. (That would complete the occurances of seven "breaths" for chapter 37). 2) I also go with "My face" and "My spirit" for Ezekiel 39:29. "And I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I shall have poured out My spirit on the house of Israel," declares the Lord." 3) For Psalm 51:10, I see God creating for David a "clean heart" and a "steadfast spirit within" him. 4) David wants his new heart and new spirit renewed rather than taken away from him. That is why I see him saying "do not take Thy holy spirit from me." 5) We could take a look, as an aside, at the occurances of "Presence" in the NASB. There are a total of seven and three of them are in Exodus. It is interesting to me that in Exodus the "bread of the Presence" is noted in the margin that it is [Lit. face]. So in a sense we can connect God's presence (face) with recognition of His spirit by reason of God's word and His bread. From the heart, Ray |

4 | Holy Spirit or wind, breath, spirit? | Ps 51:3 | Mommapbs | 116172
Greetings Ray, Would your answer be the same if you regarded the passage in Ez as prophetic - meaning that God is referring to the "remnant of Israel" (Rom 9:27; 11:25-29)that will be saved and welcome Messiah Jesus in the last days? Would not they too would receive His Spirit? Blessings on your day, mommapbs |

5 | Holy Spirit or wind, breath, spirit? | Ps 51:3 | Ray | 116201
Hi Mommapbs, Thank you for staying with this and thinking it through with me. Thank you for the Romans passage here also. To my mind if one talks about a gift, then it is a thing and not a Person. When one receives a gift or present, it is presented to him/her by a Giver. That is how I think of the spirit given to us by God. We receive His spirit. And you know that I believe in the Holy Spirit as a Person and we are led by the Spirit and are thinking here of the things of the Spirit. I simply believe that we have to distinguish between the gift and the Giver. In looking at Romans, I believe that a remnant has been saved. There was a partial hardening among the Jews until the fulness of the Gentiles has come in. Romans 11:25. The Jews received from God a spirit of stupor and they insulted their (King) on the cross and "trampled under foot the Son of God...and insulted the (Spirit) of grace." Hebrews 10:29. Romans 11:8, "just as it is written, "God gave them a spirit of stupor, Eyes to see not and ears to hear not, down to this very day." The religious leaders were looking to the Law and to their works to save them. They stumbled over the stumbling stone of works instead of believing in Him. They did not attain righteousness. Why? 1) Romans 9:32, "Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 just as it is written, "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, And he who believes in (Him) will not be [put to shame]." Ezekiel 36:30, "And (I) will multiply the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field, that you may not receive again the disgrace of famine among the nations." 2) God will judge His people, both Jew and Gentile. The Gentile also must continue in His kindness; otherwise we too will be cut off. Ezekiel 37:11, "Then He said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, 'Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished. We are completely cut off.'" Romans 11:19, "You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." 20 Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; 21 for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will He spare you. 22 Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who feel severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. 23 And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again. Ezekiel 37:14, "And I will put My [breath] within you and you will come to life, and I/ will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken it and done it," declares the (Lord)." From the heart, Ray |
