1 | The Sovereignty of God | Ps 103:19 | tgc | 124785
Bro. Hank, I really tried to tone down my first reply to this question but with some of the new post I think it is time to go a bit deeper. Concerning the sovereignty of God it seems to me from talking to young pastor who are just coming out of school that even in our seminaries this ideal is put down. The students are taught not to do or say anything that could upset the applecart and to label as deviseive anyone who does teach such a doctrine. You see that today what passes for Christan teaching is little more than guilt relief. Do not talk about sin do not talk about hell do not talk about personal responsiblity just concentrate on what makes people go home and feel good. Yes the Word Faith Movement is a major problem eroding the church from within but a bigger problem is the fact the gospel for the most part has been changed or silenced in most of today's churches.. The gospel today is that God will make you have a wonderful life take awy all of your problems and all you have to do one time is just say I am a sinner and I am sorry nothing elese. Directly in opposition to what Christ Himself taught. He said count the cost there would be persecution there would be hard times the world would hate us even as it hated Him, look at our fellow brothers and sisters in other countries who are giving up their lives for the sake of the gospel see how much of this easy beliveism garbage you can feed them. God is sovereign He is in control He did say this day would come remember the church at Ladodicea, this does not take Him by suprise. And yes ther is still a faithfull remenant you have named a few of the men who stand in the gap and proclaim the Word of Truth To this list I would add Bro. Alan Barganier and the late J. Veron McGee whoes tapes are still heard daily on many radio stations. In closing let us remember this that Jesus Christ is the King Of Kings and The LordOf Lords He is the First and the Last He started this and He will finish it let us all look foward to that great day when God's sovereignty will be made manifest to all and every knee will bow and every tounge confess Jesus Christ as Lord. tgc: you bring up some interesting points to the dailogue. I have attended four seminaries. Midwestern Baptist Seminary, Central Baptist Theological, Norther Baptist Seminary, and Trinity Theological. I received two Master degrees. In no place was I told not to say anything that would upset the apple cart. Quite the oppisite is true. I believe one needs to be careful not to generalize, especially if you have not attended seminary. I believe seminary was a wonderful experience that both myself and my wife attended and were extremely fortunate and blessed to have gotten such a rich and rewarding life long, changing oppertunity. I can say we were very selective and made our choice very wisely. Please don't lump seminary education all together, but see that this is most important for todays people desiring to be the best they canbe. justme |

3 | The Sovereignty of God | Ps 103:19 | Hank | 124795
Justme: It may be somewhat of an over-simplification to say this [but I'm over-simple myself, or didn't you know? :-)], but I believe that seminaries can be divided into two categories: liberal and conservative. Those seminaries with which you've had first-hand experience are, or at least were, fairly conservative I believe. I come from a communion other than the Southern Baptist of which my wife and I have been members some seven years. The other communion, of which we were members some 40 years, is far more liberal than the Southern Baptist Convention and so are their seminaries, of which I have a fair to middling knowlede, having read a considerable number of essays, sermons and various reports and commentaries written by professors in these seminaries. And I tell the truth when I say that some of the stuff I've read that was written by the very people who are supposed to teach and train young students how to pastor to members of Christ's church would curl the toes of anyone who believes in the authority and inerrancy of Scripture and accepts it as his sole guide to faith and practice. I'm not talking about minor differences in theology here. I'm talking about the bedrock of the Christian faith, the Bible, and the sound exegesis and interpretation of it. Some of these seminary professors, Justme, are so far out of touch with orthodox Christianity that they are on a totally different theological planet. Yes, there are some good seminaries still around, thank the Lord. But there are others that are poisoning the malleable young minds of aspiring preachers and are as apostate as apostate can be. --Hank
4 | The Sovereignty of God | Ps 103:19 | justme | 124802
Hank: I agree with what you have said. Perhaps I need to qualify my thoughts a little more. When Mre. Justme and I were praying about a seminary, we dis some very necessary reasearch. One has to look very careful at the professors, and the statement of faith the school has in place. Whotout doing ones homework on the seminary, or Bible college for that matter, then the experience can turn out to be a disaster, and shatter a persons faith. I would say without a strong solid Biblical faith in Christ, and a well formed theology, any seminary worth it's salt will be a real challenge. My experience at MidWestern was not what would say was good, except my New and Old Testament classes, which were taught by very conserative Biblical teachers. I resented to division caused by some very liberal proffesors and students. Dr. William Coble suggested I consider and pray about Central Baptist Theological Seminary. There I found a love for Missions, and made several trips to Mexico. I believe this gave me a wider understanding of what the SBS and the ABC of the USA was all about and love for both. I personally believe I have been blessed by finding out what those with different liberal theological views think. I think I can dialogue with more knowledge and use my skills better. There are some seminaries that as soon as I herar then named in reference, I know I am dealing with a neo-orthodux. I am sure most church members are mostly unaware of how many professors reject openly the total and complete authority and inerrancy of of the Scriptures. I have observed this in to some degree in what you would consider a very Biblically based Seminary. There have been cases where the teacher lied to get a position and then after tenure they came out to show their true colors. I think it may be a mistake to go to seminary before some practical ministry experience has happened. We expect those in ministry to have some solid ministry experience before entering a Doctorite of Ministry degree program is entered into, why not seminary as well? I fully expect that those who teach or preach a false Christ, will lead many astray. Jesus said not everyone who says Lord is of the Lord. Paul warned that in the last day many will have the head knowledge, but have not been genuinely born again. The example Jesus used about the seed falling on the different soils is how peopl;e have reacted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, from the time of Christ and until He comes again. I have taken to heart the Biblical warning that not many should become teachers, I would think that means pastor's, deacon's, and elder's. To be in ministry is a high calling, and I think far to many are in misistry as a profession, not a calling. Hank, I believe we are on the same wave lenght here. Blessing to you. justme |

Justme and Hank, I just began reading your thread...and had to comment! I agree with both of you. Thank God for conservative Bible colleges but many people are getting so messed up by "Bible" colleges. I went to a "Christian" college...studying business. We had a OT and NT survey class in the degree plan. Day one in OT survey, the ThD pastor/professor made his colors known. He trashed God's Word almost from his opening remarks. All of our tests were essay...you remember the old college blue books, right? Almost every answer I penned went something like this, "The answer you are looking for is this...yadyadyada...now this is what God had to say about it in His Word..." To get his seal of approval, one would usually use about 4-5 pages of a blue book and take about 45 minutes to complete a test. I usually completed each test in about 2 hours and would use 10-12 pages to build my argument. In class discussions, he would ask me where I get my facts...they were in the book he was trying to teach us...the Bible! I agree that it would (sadly) be a good idea for anyone planning to attend cemetary..oops seminary [smile] to be established in their faith. I am glad to hear that some bible colleges still have a committment to God's Word. 6days |
