1 | The Sovereignty of God | Ps 103:19 | Hank | 124597
"You don't hear much preaching these days," said David Jeremiah in a sermon broadcast on radio this afternoon, "on the sovereignty of God." He told of his amazement to find in Charles Haddon Spurgeon's sermons such a large number of sermons on God's absolute sovereignty. Dr. Jeremiah offered a large list of reasons why he believed that the subject of the sovereignty of God has grown so unpopular in the world today, even in the pulpits and pews of Christian churches. Without writing a full report on Dr. Jeremiah's sermon, I'll ask the Forum: Is it important to teach and preach and meditate upon the sovereignty of God? Why? And why do you think it has become so unpopular a subject? (Has humanism crept into the thinking of Christians? And how would this affect their thinking about the sovereignty of God?) Lastly, what does the Bible say about God's sovereignty? --Hank
2 | The Sovereignty of God | Ps 103:19 | tgc | 124755
Bro. Hank, Excellent question it cuts right to the heart of many debates today. Let me offer this answer to your question. The reason God's sovereignity is not taught or preached about today is people do not want to hear it let alone be confronted with it. Therefore many of our pastors will not talk about it for fear of upsetting someone. You see now why I say this cuts to the heart of many of our problems in the church today Christans without convictions pastor worried about the backbone to stand up for the whole word of God. Many today want to hear about an all loving God who condiders all of us His children who never gets mad and has no place for wrath. I personally do not know this God nor does anyone elese who has seriouly looked at what scripture reveals to us about the nature of God. Yes He is a loving and forgiving God just look at the Crossbut He is also a perfect gentleman who will not force His will on any. So for those who choose to accept His offer of salvation recoginize the Lordship of Jesus Christ and come to Him in repentance there is the right to be called the children of God for those who reject this offer and the Lordship of Jesus are not children of God rather they are children of wrath. In short to preach and teach the sovereignty of God is to come face to face with the real nature of God and today that is considered in tolerant and definitely not politcally correct. 3 | The Sovereignty of God | Ps 103:19 | Hank | 124760
tgc: Thanks, brother, for another excellent response to the question regarding the sovereignty of God. And I believe you're right, too. If the pure and undefiled gospel of Jesus Christ were pure grain alcohol, not many church goers on Sunday morning would get enough of it to feel the effects, considering what little they get being spoon fed by some cowardly pastors who value their salary and position so much that they'd rather dilute the truth than their money. This sounds harsh but I believe it's true. I've been a Christian and a church goer for 55 years and am totally flabbergasted by what I've observed taking place in Christendom during those years. And it seems to get worse instead of better. My greatest hope and solace is to know the Lord and to believe firmly and unshakably in his word of truth, which leads me to the conclusion that He is sovereign, that He is now and ever shall be in charge. Crazy things are going on in our world, and even though I don't presume to understand even a fraction of them, I cannot embrace any other view than that the sovereign Lord of heaven and earth is working His purpose out in His own way, in his own time frame, and to His own glory. Yet from our limited perspective, living as we must in this chaotic world, these times are not really much better -- indeed they may be worse -- than the times during the American Revolution of which Thomas Paine wrote, "These are the times that try men's souls." May God help the saints to persevere! --Hank
