1 | Why past vs. future tense in Ps 102:16? | Ps 102:16 | MrArnold2345 | 99677
Psalm 102:16 in the NASB states, "For the Lord has built up Zion; He has appeared in His glory." Other translations (NRSV, NIV, KJV)I've checked have "the Lord will appear" and "He will build up" instead. Why does the NASB translate the verbs in the past tense ("has appeared" and has built up")? Unless I knew the difference between and among translations, I would have assumed God's actions here (Ps 102:16)were already past instead of future. What was the NASB translators reasons for using the past tense? |

2 | Why past vs. future tense in Ps 102:16? | Ps 102:16 | Morant61 | 99678
Greetings MrArnold2345! This is an example of what is called a prophetic perfect. A perfect tense is usually past action with enduring results. However, in prophetic passages (both in Greek and Hebrew) a perfect can be used of a future action which is so certain that it can be spoken of as completed already - hence the perfect tense. The only problem is how does one determine if it is a regular perfect or a prophetic perfect? In this case, various translators have apparently taken different stands on that point. In light of verses like v. 18, I would go with the prophetic perfect. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

3 | Prophetic perfect tense in other verses? | Ps 102:16 | MrArnold2345 | 99742
Thanks for the clarification, however, I'm wondering how many people will think the NASB translation in Ps 102:16 indicates something already accomplished without respect to the future. Are there other places in the NASB where a prophetic perfect is used instead of the future tense (used in other translations) where the context of the verse is clearly God's future dealing with Israel?
4 | Prophetic perfect tense in other verses? | Ps 102:16 | Jehonadab | 99753
The New World Translation reads, "For Jehovah will certainly build up Zion; He must appear in his glory." In 607 B.C.E., after Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonian World Power, they, the nation of Israel, were deported to Babylonia. For 70 years their God-given homeland, the land of Judah, lay desolate according to the decree of Jehovah God. His earthly arrangement for true worship seemed to be out of existence. But there was a faithful remnant that longed for such a true worship to emerge again. The psalmist expressed their feelings in the 102nd Psalm, looking forward to the time when God will "build up Zion" again, the nation of natural Israel being restored to their homeland in 537 B.C.E.,so that true worship can once again be reinstituted. |

My question asks if there are any other prophetic perfects in the NASB (besides Ps 102:16)that are translated as future verbs in other translations (NIV, NRSV, KJV, etc.)

MrArnold2345: Welcome to the Bible Study Forum! Please feel free to contact The Lockman Foundation who did all the publication and oversaw the transalation teams when making the NASB and the updated as well, at 1-714-879-3055. They will present your question to a translation team and respond to you in a timmely fashion. I have called them, about a concern I had. Their explimation was quite lengthy and was very comprehensive. They encourage such questions. The New world Translation Jehonadab refered to is perhaps the most mistranslated Bible yet to date. This Bible is a cult version by the J. W. cult. My advice is to keep away from anyone who would suggest it is a worthy translation. I say this as srtong warning that there are less than honest J.W.'s who are wolves in sheeps skins. Peace. justme |

7 | Prophetic perfect tense in other verses? | Ps 102:16 | Makarios | 99778
Greetings Justme! I most certainly agree! All Christians (who believe in the Deity of Christ) should steer completely clear of the most irresponsible claim to Bible translation that this world has ever known (NWT), and would encourage others to do the same. Blessings to you, Makarios |

You are correct, and we need to besure of what we state, so we are crediable, and to read John chapter 1, in this evil garbage, is important so you can defend what you say about it.
