Hi Rowdy, I think it was when my kids were teenagers that they forced me to practice the hair pulling routine. It is, in my opinion, an act of frustration more then anything. I must say, we have all heard of the expression of pulling ones hair out but I don’t see what that has to do with the biblical connotation of repentance. Originally the word for repentance, in the Koine Greek was METANOIA, which is a compound word META, meaning to change and NOIA form from the root word NOUS or mind, i.e. changing ones mind. Self-flagellation and sorrow ironically doesn’t even fit into the picture. The verse that comes to mind is the following. Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. This ties in perfectly with, John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Jesus is telling everyone that they need to change their mind about what they are doing to acquire eternal life; that consist of not relying on ones self but relying on the work of Christ. They must put all of their faith in Christ and rely on what he did for them on the cross; it’s like a 180-degree turn, as it were. Aside from this, all those that don’t change their way of thinking about the person and work of Jesus, are going to perish. I hope your hair comes back; I have some stuff that could grow hair on an egg, it’s called mold, CDBJ |

I must admit, I don't understand how my post introduced the concept of repentance into this discussion BUT since you brought it up, I'll respond. I agree with you, I do think that a lot of folks don't understand the proper and full meaning of repentance. As I'm sure you know, it does mean a complete reversal from the previous lifestyle of sin. That lifestyle means different things to different people. To some it's obvious when sin dominates their lives; they must repent and resolve and stop those sins of commission. But to others who are fairly good people with a mostly good moral life, they seem to miss the fact that they, along with all of us need to repent from their shortcomings and learn to stop the sin of omission in their lives. Also, don't forget the teachings in James, especially Chapter 2. Yes, emphatically we are saved absolutely due to the work of our Lord, BUT our Lord is expecting to see OUR works as proof that we really are His children and NOT just saying "Lord, Lord" to get ourselves into Heaven. Thanks for the tip on mold. I actually had a rug for a few months and paid handsomely for it at the encouragement of my wife. But it just wasn't for me. The biggest thing was it was expense in monthly maintenance and washing it with expensive shampoos. God bless you, dear friend. --Rowdy |

Hi Rowdy, I liked your post and I agree, but if I may, I would like to add to it. The diversified objects that a person can repent from can go from a life of religion to one of crime but the main object in repentance is not what one turns from but what they turn to. The object of repentance, with regards to salvation, must always be the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have heard many testimonies where people have changed their ways and joined this or that church and became a better person but they never speak of how Jesus has changed their life; He is the one thing that’s missing in their testimony! And really the only thing that counts. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. The way I see it, it isn’t what I have done that means anything It’s what Jesus has done for me and I believe it. CDBJ P.S. The Bible says that the Lord know how many hairs we have on our head. Luke 12:7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Some of us sure make it easy for Him. |
