Edwin - Having read your post on "soul sleep" and the responses of your peers to it, it occurs to me that you are obliged, in view of these responses and the guidelines of Study Bible Forum, to sort from your responses those statements which have a firm foundation in Scripture and those which are merely your own opinion and, in order to avert the risk of leading our readers astray, to label them as one or the other I'm certain you are aware by now that sola scriptura is the pivotal phrase upon which Study Bible Forum turns; hence, ideas and opinions that wander afield from Christian orthodoxy are not looked upon with a great deal of favor. --Hank | ||||||

I must confess that I did hesitate somewhat before sending my second post of yesterday, as I anticipated that it might provoke adverse comments, which of course it has, and in view of this I am quite happy for that post to be removed from this website, if the Moderators feel that it would be best to do so. I recently received the e-mail below, on a topic related to this one, and I would greatly value your advice on how to respond to same. Thank you. ebrain. Hello Edwin, I trust you are well. My daughter asked me a question the other night and I am unsure of the answer, thought you may be able to help us out. Samuel the Prophet when the witch called him up for Saul, told Saul that he and his sons would be with him the next day.Why did Saul and Samuel go to the same place? When Saul turned from the Lord. Surely Samuel would have gone to heaven as the thief on the cross was told by our Lord,"Today you will be with me in paradise" Ilook forward to your reply God Bless Tina 1Sa 28:19 "Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines |

Greetings Edwin! I pray that you do not find the responses to your post adversarial. I am sure they were not intended in that manner at all my friend. It is just that the doctrine of 'soul sleep' does not appear to have Scriptural foundation, so when you appeared to be advocating it, the position was challenged. As to your question, the answer could be one of three things. First of all, Samuel could have simply been saying that Saul and his sons would be with him in death, without reference to any specific place but simply speaking of the state of death. Secondly, Samuel could have been referring to the grave. Finally, he could have been referring to Abraham's bosom or paradise. You brought this topic up the other day so I know that you are familiar with this place. Scripturally speaking, it appears to have been a place where the Saints went prior to the death and resurrection of Christ. However, paradise is not heaven. Saul, Samuel, the other Old Testament saints, and the thief on the cross did not go to heaven until after the death and resurrection of Christ. Now, Scripture tells us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Cor. 5:8). Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Dear Brother Tim, I've heard some teach that the one speaking in 2 Samuel 28:16-19 was but a simulacrum of the dead prophet; i.e., a deceiving spirit. I'm not fully persuaded on that count myself. On one hand, some credence is lent to that view since Saul made the assumption as to the identity of the prophet based on the description given by the witch (verse 14). On the other hand, from that point in the narrative the Scripture itself calls him "Samuel" (verse 15). If it was a deceiving spirit, we'd not be able to arrive at any conclusions, since deception would be an intrinsic aspect of anything it said. If it was Samuel, we'd nevertheless have to be cautious, since we'd necessarily shy away from building doctrine on narrative. Regardless, we stand on safer ground in building our doctrine from didactic passages. For example, in this context, "So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:6-7 ESV) Or even, "I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better." (Philippians 1:23 ESV) Just a couple thoughts, even though your excellent posts decidedly need no embellishment. I just can't help myself... you know? :-) By the way, I agree with your concern about regarding posts that take a differing view as adversarial. When we polemicize, as believers, we do not do so because we are adversaries, nor even as competitors! On the contrary, our struggle is to render truth, that we may all embrace that truth. We are coworkers and fellow students, striving jointly to achieve a proper understanding of the Word entrusted to us by our Father. If we deem our interchange as adversarial, we're in danger of shifting from the rational to the emotional; our focus will then have moved from the Word to the self. Therefore, your reminder, kindly put, is well warranted and appreciated. In Him, Doc |

Greetings Doc! Thanks for the input! I usually take the approach that it was actually Samuel since the text identifies him as Samuel, but that the medium was the most surprised of all! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
