1 | Do you own a TNIV? | 2 Sam 21:19 | Timothy Paul | 68160 | ||
Dear justme, I have some experience with a NIV, as it was the required translation for a correspondance course that I took. The course and the NIV were both exceptional, then I met a proponent of the KJV who was a little too outspoken. This man showed me many differences between the KJV and the NIV, which have since led me to treat many "newer translaions" with due caution. Since most of us know of the story where David kills Goliath, Yet, for instance, the above verse in the KJV reads, And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew [the brother of] Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear [was] like a weaver's beam. I hope this helps you, without trying to stir up contention, for I truly do like the NIV for reading purposes. Bless You, Tim |

Timothy Paul: Thank you for your response. I am a solid student on the NIV. I have consiereable more confidence in the NIV than the KJV. The KJV has many words which we no longer us or they now have different meanings. Then too, the KJV did not have use of older more reliable manuscripts. I personally consider the Updated NASB far above any translation that attempts as close to a word for word translation as possible; but we know that is not totally possible. However the NIV is equally as good in getting the thought accross. The KJV is at a 13th grade reading level, NASB I think is about 10th grade, and NIV is 8th grade reading level. Most people read at the 6th grade level so what do you think people get the most comprehension out of? The best Bible is the one you will read! justme |

Justme Hi, how was your Thanksgiving? Let me interject my thoughts though I do not own a TNIV and probably never will. I have read just about all the info there is on it. From what I can tell it is a revamp of the NIV mainly done as a revenue generator. The biggest problem I have with it is the gender inclusiveness they wrote into it. Instead of using the word 'man' they use the 'human race', or 'their' is used instead of 'his'. While I know that considered politically correct to many I see it pandering to special interest groups. The biggest problem I have with the whole thing is about 4 or 5 years ago the publishers made a PROMISE not to publish this version after a public uproar. Then without warning they reneged on their promise and brought the version out. To me this shows a complete lack of character and integrity. For me the issue is big enough to boycott all Zondervan products an action I recommend to everyone. You posted another question on this subject and in it you asked is it better that the Living Bible. Let me say anything is better than the Living Bible. Now if you meant the New Living Translation that is another story. From what you said about a desire for readability The New Living Translation is what your looking for. It is simply brilliant in use of words to convey the ideas of the original writers. Also let me suggest if your looking for something that is nearly as literal as the NASB, has the poetic flow of KJV and readability of NIV then you might want to look at the New English Standard Version. I too like the NLT, and would also recommend. I purchased The Open Bible in the NLT translation for my daughter. Just so Justme in not thrown for a loop tho, let me say that it is also gender inclusive, as the TNIV. retxar |
