1 | Do you own a TNIV? | 2 Sam 21:19 | retxar | 68663
Are you posting in tongues now bro? :-) Tell me what you know about the NIrV. Is this the same as the TNIV or is the TNIV an update or replacement for the NIrV? I had a NIrV about a year ago that I gave away, and when the TNIV came out, I thought it was probally just an update of the NIrV, as they both seem to be for the same market and see no need in both. I know it is also a resent translation, and from what I remember, it seemed to be along the same lines as the TNIV is spoken of. thanks, retxar |

Retxar, both the TNIV and NirV generate from the same publisher (Zondervan) and from approximately the same translation team, but they are not the same publication and the TNIV is not an update of the NirV but of the NIV. The NIV was supposedly translated at about an 8th grade level of reading ability, while the NirV was 3rd or 4th grade (so they say.) One of these days, the way things are going with these simplified, paraphrased versions of what purports to be Scripture, we may see a super-duper ultra-simple illustrated version designed for the toddler in diapers, with a pacifier for a book-mark. The big hurrah over the TNIV (Today's New International Version) has to do with its attempt to be gender-neutral in its approach; this has resulted in quite a storm of criticism of Zondervan for publishing something of this kind which they pledged some time ago not to do. They say that the public needed an updated version of the NIV. I say that the publisher needed the public's money. The NIV is still in print. I've never been enthusiastic about the NIV and am even less enthusiastic about TNIV. I've read umpteen reviews of TNIV and read a number of passages from it on-line -- enough to convince me I don't have any inclination to waste my money on a copy. --Hank
