21 | Creation days | Genesis | jlhetrick | 238950
Hi Jalek - one of the most important reasons to "read it carefully" is to ensure we don't read something into it that isn't there. It's also important that we don't assume that The Creator God is limited in ways that our logic might suggest He should be. In other words, we shouldn't assume (especially in the clear context given in the opening verses of Scripture) that God was required to put one before the other. This is why I didn't offer my own creative explanation of the first verse in Scripture. It, Scripture, speaks for itself. Still, we are given a logic to think and problem solve and even to help us understand and interpret Scripture. We are "thinking" creatures. With that said, I would argue the logical point that if something comes first (verse 1) we shouldn't attempt to put verse 5 ahead of it. If we are reading carefully we can't possibly point to verse 5 to support your point can we? Reading carefully would require that we also read the verses between 1 and 5, particularly verse 3. Verse 3 says "Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light." . Notice the adverb "then". Then in verse 4 it says "God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.". Finally, we get to verse 5 where it says that God called the light day and the darkness night declaring "one day". Without reading into the text myself or trying to say something is there that isn't there my best attempt to understand the text, as it is written, is that God created the heavens and the earth (verse 1) AFTER that He called light onto the formless void and still after that he separated that light from the darkness at which "time" (no pun intended) TIME as the earth and it's creatures would know it began. |

32 | Who di God listen to in Old testement? | OT general | jlhetrick | 238568
There wasn't only one person that God listened to. God heard the prayers of people and responded to them in the OT days as well as NT. My understanding of Scripture is that God never does what we want unless what we are asking for is in perfect agreement with His will. We do not persuade God to change His mind. I have heard people speak of the account in Genesis 18 and 19 as God being "persuaded" by Abraham when Abraham advocated for the City of Sodom and "bargained" with God asking If God would spare the city if a certain number of righteous people could be found there. God had told Abraham that He would destroy Sodom due to it’s sinfulness. Abraham began the bargain by asking if God would spare the city if 50 righteous people were found. God did agree to spare the City if 50 righteous were found. On first reading it may appear that Abraham persuaded God to change his mind. However, we know that God knew exactly how many "righteous" people were there. Apparently Abraham assumed that 50 might be a high number in the sinful city so began to bargain the number down to 45, 30 and all the way down to 10, a safe number to include Lot and his family. Abraham wanted to save his nephew Lot and Lot’s family. What we finally see is that God used the opportunity to show Abraham (among other things) that God's will in fact would be done and no changing of God's mind would occur. God did destroy Sodom though He did spare Lot and his family all but Lot and his daughters. We can conclude, from the wider context of Scripture, that God intended to spare Lot and in fact was the one persuading Abraham to pray for it hence, the visit to Abraham in the first place. |

35 | Accounts of Revival | Acts 10:44 | jlhetrick | 238372
Hi Bill, I think an important part of this discussion would be a defining of Revival. We have folks running around the world putting up tents calling “revivals" out of thin air on a nightly basis, arriving and ending perfectly at the coordinated time prescribed by the organizers. For me, I lean toward believing that God will determine the time and place of any true revival and yes, I do believe the Church is involved, I just don’t think it’s done through Outlook meeting invites (or signs posted around town) nor can it be commanded on time and place by people. Of course I could be wrong… I just don’t find support for that in Scripture. I once saw a chicken actually running around the yard with no head (after my father separated the two) it went on for what seemed like 30 seconds or more. I of course didn’t believe this to be a miracle and had a man been standing their preaching I still would not have convinced myself it was a miracle (even at the age of 6 years old). People have been rising up out of wheel chairs and throwing down their crutches at these “revivals” for a very long time. I have even personally met one who claims he witnessed (at a revival) God miraculously put a mouthful of gold caps on his nieces “diseased teeth” (though I couldn’t bring myself to ask why he thought God needed or chose to use gold caps instead of simply healing the teeth in the first place - I wondered if the caps had lot numbers embossed). Of course we have multiple accounts (In Scripture) where people were able to FAKE even some seemingly complex “miracles”. We should not be looking for miracles as signs of revival but evidence of people saved instead. Some, even in the church, believe the weeks following the 911 attacks on the US were nothing short of a revival. Churches were packed to capacity for weeks after and the sale of spiritual literature sky-rocketed. I’m hopeful many were saved during that time but if they were it was because they heard the preaching of the Word about Christ the savior and through that God gave them the faith to believe (Romans 10:17). This may have actually been revival but I don’t know of any claims of physical miracles attributed. The Country, on the other hand, is no doubt more sinful and further from God today than it was on 9/10/2001 In remembering the words of Jesus, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.” (Matthew 16:4, NASB) I believe it’s of the highest importance that we understand what and where our thoughts and energy should be where the things of God are concerned. I don’t believe we should be looking for signs and miracles beyond that of individual regeneration of lost people. |

36 | What are the names of daughters of israe | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 238194
I believe your answer, EdB is referring to something different from the "daughters of Israel" (plural) that Carl might be asking about. Dinah was the only daughter born to Jacob (who God renamed Israel (Genesis 32:28). If Carl63 cold be more specific with his question we might better respond. I believe he is referring to passages such as Deut 23:17, Judg. 11:40, 2 Sam. 1:24, etc... in which case Doc has already answered appropriately. Is Doc's answer what you were looking for Carl? |

37 | Wife supports sinfull son | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 238188
Hi, and welcome to the Forum. first let me say I agree with EdB but would like to add the following for thought. Participating in or contributing to sin is never the right answer; however, being merciful and acting with grace toward the sinner always is. If you and me were to honestly and carefully consider our own daily sinfulness we will be truly humbled by the mercy and the loving grace that God does afford us. After all, my sin and your sin is no less sinful to God than that sin of your wife's son. As a parent of adult children I try always to remember, when my children disappoint me, that God has already given me the answer in how to deal with them. I won't approve of their sin (no more than He would approve of mine) yet I will never abandon them or stop loving them and doing all I can to protect and correct them. Hope this helps. |

38 | once sasved always saved? | Luke 23:43 | jlhetrick | 238187
Hi and welcome to the Forum. This is a much debated question/topic and you will likely get both the answer yes and no from many hear and anywhere else you pose the question. It has been debated for longer than you and I have been alive and will continue to be a debate between Christians until the truth is revealed in Glory. You might try various searches in the Search boxes to the right and see what you come up with. Better than that though, would be to begin a serious study of Scripture for yourself and see what is revealed to you. With that said, I would point you to Romans 8:26 and keep reading through the end of the chapter and work out from there. Paul wrote of our victory in Christ Jesus and it certainly appears to me that he, Paul did not believe the finished work of Christ could be undone by anything at all. Hope this gives you a good start. |

40 | was peter a roman | NT general | jlhetrick | 238179
Hi, and welcome to the Forum. Peter was a Jew who lived and ran a fishing business in Bethsaida of Galilee, Israel. Tradition has Peter spending the later part of his life in Rome and being crucified there but whether he was ever made a Roman Citizen I can't say. I assume that information might be found somewhere in historical records if one was interested in spending the time and energy researching it. |
