Bible Question: So far i have seen in the bible that all the Revival that happen in the new testament contains accounts of extraordinary physical manifestation, if i am not mistaking. But nowadays we don't hear anything of that sort and if so what is coursing it |
Bible Answer: Hi Bill, I think an important part of this discussion would be a defining of Revival. We have folks running around the world putting up tents calling “revivals" out of thin air on a nightly basis, arriving and ending perfectly at the coordinated time prescribed by the organizers. For me, I lean toward believing that God will determine the time and place of any true revival and yes, I do believe the Church is involved, I just don’t think it’s done through Outlook meeting invites (or signs posted around town) nor can it be commanded on time and place by people. Of course I could be wrong… I just don’t find support for that in Scripture. I once saw a chicken actually running around the yard with no head (after my father separated the two) it went on for what seemed like 30 seconds or more. I of course didn’t believe this to be a miracle and had a man been standing their preaching I still would not have convinced myself it was a miracle (even at the age of 6 years old). People have been rising up out of wheel chairs and throwing down their crutches at these “revivals” for a very long time. I have even personally met one who claims he witnessed (at a revival) God miraculously put a mouthful of gold caps on his nieces “diseased teeth” (though I couldn’t bring myself to ask why he thought God needed or chose to use gold caps instead of simply healing the teeth in the first place - I wondered if the caps had lot numbers embossed). Of course we have multiple accounts (In Scripture) where people were able to FAKE even some seemingly complex “miracles”. We should not be looking for miracles as signs of revival but evidence of people saved instead. Some, even in the church, believe the weeks following the 911 attacks on the US were nothing short of a revival. Churches were packed to capacity for weeks after and the sale of spiritual literature sky-rocketed. I’m hopeful many were saved during that time but if they were it was because they heard the preaching of the Word about Christ the savior and through that God gave them the faith to believe (Romans 10:17). This may have actually been revival but I don’t know of any claims of physical miracles attributed. The Country, on the other hand, is no doubt more sinful and further from God today than it was on 9/10/2001 In remembering the words of Jesus, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.” (Matthew 16:4, NASB) I believe it’s of the highest importance that we understand what and where our thoughts and energy should be where the things of God are concerned. I don’t believe we should be looking for signs and miracles beyond that of individual regeneration of lost people. |
