381 | Baptism in the Holy Spirit? | 1 Cor 12:13 | Robert Nicholson | 76662
Disciplerami: I believe that he context of 1 Cor. 12 supports that the baptism of V 13 is the Holy Spirit who places each believer in the chruch which is his body v. 27. In Acts 10:44-46 those that "heard" the word, the Holy Ghost fell on them. Peter asks the question; "Can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we"? These people were believers before they were baptised. I find the order in the account of the Ethiopian enuch in Acts 8: 26-39. God is already working in the heart of this man as he studies Isaiah 53. God sends his servant Philip to the man to explain the scriptures to him. In v. 35 We find that from Isaiah 53 Philip "preached unto him Jesus". When they came to water the man asks "What doth hinder me to be baptized?" I believe in the next verse we find the main requirement for believers baptism and that is that one is a believer. "Philip said "if thou believest with all thy heart, thous mayest" v.37 We then hear the confession of the eunuh "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God" This is a truth which is can only be revealed to the heart by God indicating that the eunuch is a believer. At that point they both go down into the water and the man is baptised. I believe that from this account we could say that what had happened within the heart of the man spiritually, was proclaimed outwardly in his baptism by water. Peace in his name Robert |

382 | How could the Bible be perfect? | 1 Cor 13:10 | Robert Nicholson | 54075
Dear brother If we accept that the Ultimate author of the word of God is God himself, we should understand that the word which God gave through various people over the years is accurate. It is amazing that God has chosen the humble ones of this world to entrust his word, this is his perogative. This idea is given to us in Paul's letter to the Corinthians; "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." ( 2 Cor, 4:7) Peter writes "For prophecy came in in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" 2 Peter 1:21 In other words the scriptures were "God breathed" When we refer to the new testament we find the promise of the Lord Jesus to his disciples "But the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your rememberance, whatsoever I have said unto you" (John 14:26) Thus, the new testament was not simply written from the memories of those who followed Jesus, but were written as they were guided by the Holy Spirit. Jesus said "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." (Matt. 24:35) For the creature to suggest that the Creator can not guard his word is ludicrous. Robert |

383 | What theory's attempt disprove resurrect | 1 Cor 15:20 | Robert Nicholson | 54759
Dr X Matt. 28: 12-15 tells us one of the first lies used to try and disprove the ressurection of Christ. The soldiers were paid great money to say that his disciples stole the body while they slept. What is wrong with this picture? First, Roman soldiers who were found sleeping on such a job would be put to death. Secondly, if the disciples stole away his body, they would know that the resurrection was a hoax. Why then would they be willing to give their lives for Christ if he was not a living saviour? I have heard of others who claimed that he did not die but simply went into a swoon and was revived later. To see how lidicrous this is all we need to do is read the events of the crucifixtion to realize that this man truly died. I think we should reverse the question and look at the proofs which show us that Christ is risen. This is the foundation stone of what we have in Christ. "If he is not risen than we are yet in our sins". 1Cor.15 Robert |

384 | What happens to our spirit at death? | 1 Cor 15:42 | Robert Nicholson | 31480
Hi Nancy K. Sometimes when we look upon our loved ones as their body is lowered into the grave we look for answers which would give us comfort. As has already been referred to in some of the previous postings, Paul covers this topic in 2 Cor. 5. It would seem that Paul is nearing the end of his life, his desire to be with Christ and yet he realizes his work is not yet done. He talks about our bodies as a temporary tent in comparision to our heavenly house which is permanent. In v. 3 he mentions the naked state or in other words when the spirit has left the body. Pauls desire is for the rapture and yet it seems that he is beginning to realize that he may die before Christ comes. Nevertheless, in V8 he speaks about "being absent from the body and at home with the Lord". Do these departed ones who sleep in Jesus 1 Thess 4 have a consciousness of the Lord himself? In the KJV we read "Absent from the body, present with the Lord" I believe the word present means that we are aware of him. Secondly, in Rev. 6: 9 to 11 we read about the souls of them who were slain for the word of God are under the altar and crying "how long O lord holy and true, dost thos not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth" We see that in a future day these souls will be in communication with God. I love to think of my loved ones who are with Christ and wonder what their thoughts are as they behold him in all his beauty. This would be enough for all eternity and yet; there is much more, these spirits will come with him and be united with their immortal bodies and we that are alive will be changed, and we will be ever with him. To think that we will have all our facilties both physical and spiritual unhampered by sin to whorship and adore the Lord Jesus for all eternity. A sure hope! beyound compare. In Christ Robert |

385 | A Study on the HOLY SPIRIT | 2 Cor 1:22 | Robert Nicholson | 37164
Dear Brother Makarios: What a concise and excellent overview of God the Spirit. Quote: All true believers in Christ are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19) and the Spirit is a gift (Rom. 5:5). Believers will never lose the 'indwelling' of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16), and absence of the Spirit is a proof of being unsaved (Romans 8:9). The Holy Spirit baptizes us into the body of Christ! (1 Cor. 12:13, Eph. 4:5, Rom. 6:1-10) The above true are so important of those "born from above" (John 3:3,5,7) The Holy Spirit is cannot be received in parts(John3:34) since is a person who takes up residence in the believer permanently. More importantly, it is the Holy Spirit who baptises each believer into the church which is his body (1 Cor. 12:13) A permanent relationship which is eternal. The Indwelling Holy Spirit is our intercessor ( Romans 8:26-27) and is the one who enables us to overcome the attacks of satan(1John 4:4) God bless you in your ongoing study brother Robert |

386 | How can we be more like Jesus? | 2 Cor 3:18 | Robert Nicholson | 32929
Dear friends More like Jesus? Am I, are you, after many years do others see that we have changed to be more like him? This is not some arrogant man made boast, but a gift from God himself as we continue to behold the glory of the Lord in his precious word. I love the words by Max Lucado in his book "Just like Jesus" "God loves you just the way you are, but he refuses to leave you there...His plan is nothing short of total transformation" The grace of God is awesome, to think that he can save a power sinner like me, change me by his spirit and give me the opportunity to grow into the image of his Son! |

387 | How can we be more like Jesus? | 2 Cor 3:18 | Robert Nicholson | 32978
Benjamite: Thank you for the excellent response. My post was intended to be rhetorical and reflective. I was hoping for response to share with others their thoughts on some of these topics which we sometimes take for granted. I agree our change is gradual, in some of us, especially me he has a challenging job and yet as we behold him by his Spirit through his word we should grow to know him and reflect Christ to the World through us. I do not believe the day of perfection will come until we are totally changed at his coming. Peace in his Name Robert |

388 | How can we be more like Jesus? | 2 Cor 3:18 | Robert Nicholson | 33076
Dear Sister, Thank you for your response. It is wonderful to mutallly share our Saviour's love and to discuss God's purposes for us and through us. I love the words penned by Paul to the Philippians, "That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made comformable unto his death" Phil. 3:10 I agree that it is our Lord's command that we be concerned about the great commission Matt. 28: 19-20. "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things." Rom. 10:15 Peace to you in our Saviour's name Robert Nicholson |

389 | after death, right then, what? | 2 Cor 5:8 | Robert Nicholson | 47319
Dear Farout: It is interesting that the scripture does not say we will go to heaven when we die. This of course gets a reaction from those who have always believed it as such. On the other hand we know that we will be present with the Lord who sits on the right hand of the Majesty on high (Heb. 1:3) What awaits the Christian at death? As you have pointed out from 2 Cor. 5:8 that "we are absent from the body and present with the Lord". I believe the word "present" indicates that we are aware of his personal presence. In John 14 the Lord Jesus makes it clear that he must go to Calvary to prepare a place for us "that where I am , there ye may be also."(John 14:3) You are correct that when a Christain dies that he or she is referred to as asleep in Christ. 1Thess. 4:13-18 is one reference. However, I do not this believe this means "soul sleep" as taught by some. In Rev.6:9-10 we are read about "he souls of them which were slain for the word of God" and how they cry "How long O Lord..." Where is heaven the abode of God? Where is paradise? Are they the same place? Before the death of Christ we are made to understand that all souls went to hades the place of departed spirits. Hades was divided with a great gulf between those who were tormented and those who were comforted in Abrahams bosum. Luke 16: 19-31. We also know that upon Calvary's cross the Lord Jesus declared to the dying thief "today shalt thou be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43) We know that the thief and the Saviour shared paradise that day. God had declared in the Psalms "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (hades); neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." I believe that the Lord Jesus was at comfort in Paradise after he finished his work at Calvary. Not only that on the third day God raised him from amoung the dead bodily and that he ascended to the right hand of God. Is paradise the same today? I think not. Concerning the resurrection and ascention of Christ we read: "Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)" Eph. 4: 8-10 It would appear that the Lord Jesus emptied "Abrahams bosum" and led the souls of "just men made perfect" into the very presence of God on high. Paul provides some insight as to Paradise and heaven. In Acts 14 Paul was stoned and left for dead at Lystra. We are given some insight to what appears to be an "out of body" experience for Paul. He recounts the event in the third person be careful not to glorify himself. In 1 Cor. 12:2 he tells "such an one was caught up into the third heaven" In verse 4 he mentions "being caught up into paradise" This would appear to place the third heaven and paradise as the same place which from the language of 1 Cor. 12: 4 is the abode of God. Brother, I have read your transcript and think that you should be teaching me. However, it is wonderful to discuss the things of God knowing that "it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." (1 Cor. 2:9) "What will it be to dwell above And with the King of Glory reign Since the blest knowledge of his love so brightens all this dreary plain No heart can think, no tongue can tell What joy 'twill be with Christ to dwell Rejoicing in his love Robert |

390 | are there any souls in heaven , | 2 Cor 5:8 | Robert Nicholson | 51055
Sylaws: I had a lengthy answer for you, but the computer took it away. Souls in heaven? Where is heaven? It is where Jesus is! In 11 Cor. 5: 8-9 Paul teaches us that if we are present in the body we are absent from the Lord. However, if we are absent from the body we are present with the Lord. Present has the sense of a concious knowledge of him. He has not given us much to understand what saved loved ones are enjoying in his presence. Are there souls already in heaven? You have mentioned 1 Thess. 4 We read in v. 14 "For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him" When Christians die they are said to be asleep in Jesus. We find that they are already in his presence and when he comes there is an order in resurrection. a) they which are dead in Christ shall rise first". Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." Paul expands on this idea In 1 Cor. 15:54 "the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed" The change which we shall undergo is the same as Enoch who was translated that he should not see death. I would agree with you that there are at least two who are with Christ in changed bodies, namely, Enoch and Elijah. When the Lord Jesus rose from the dead he emptied the saved side of hades and transferred them to paradise, the third heaven, the abode of God. God has not given us the details. However, I am sure that those of the old testament who died in faith are with him and will enjoy him forever. Those who have trusted him after the cross and have died are in his personal presence waiting until he comes to this earth. I love the words of Paul "to be absent with the body, present with the Lord." This is our hope as we watch for the Lord from heaven. Are souls asleep. According to Rev. 6:10-11 we read of the souls who were martyered for Christ and how they cry for justice. Souls which are asleep do not cry for justice. I hope I have helped Robert Lift up your heads your redemption draweth neigh. |

391 | absentfrombodyisto be present with Lord | 2 Cor 5:8 | Robert Nicholson | 67220
Dear brother/sister Wordnut: This wonderful truth is taught in 2 Cor. 5: 1-9 Paul also discusses his yearning to be with Christ in Philippians 1:23 I love the words of the KJV "For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:" We see hear that the faithful servant of the Lord desires to "be with Christ which is far better" However, in verse 24 he realizes that his responsiblity and work on earth are not yet finished. The confidence which Paul had is inspiring. Near the end of his life he writes: " I know in whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed to him against that day" 2 Tim. 1:12 His words are especially touching in 2 Tim. 4:6-7 "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith" Thank God for our sure hope Robert |

392 | When we die do we go directly to Christ? | 2 Cor 5:8 | Robert Nicholson | 72247
Dear Erusni: In 2 Cor.5 Paul discusses the fact that we have an earthly or (tent) house which is our mortal body. I believe we must remember that we are soul and spirit which have a body not the other way around. Our physical body will eventually die if Christ be not come and this temporary body will return to dust. However, our soul is eternal and will not die. We "the real person" will be with Christ! In v. 2 Paul tells us "we have a building of God" which is eternal and immortal in contrast to our earthly body. However, we will not get that eternal body until Christ comes and we all are changed. Thus "We are confident and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord" This would show us that for the believer the moment we take flight from our body we will be with Christ. Paul yearns for this "For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better" (Phil 1:23) Paul wants to be with Christ and yet he realizes the Lord still has work from him. I do not believe that in either instance is there any suggestion of soul sleep. But rather that our soul is separated from our bodies and with Christ. (present) When a christian is promoted to glory the scriptures do not speak of death, but rather that they sleep in Jesus. (1 Cor. 15:51) "we shall not all sleep,(die), but we shall all be changed". In Paul's references to being with Christ, I believe has the sense of conscious knowledge of whom we are with. John in the Revelation of Jesus Christ writes "when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice saying, How long O LOrd holy and true, does thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth" Rev, 6: 9 to 10 These souls are not sleeping nor are they silent and unaware. Some day the silver thread will break, And I as now,no more shall sing, But O the joy when I awake, Within the palace of the King! We look for the Saviour from heaven Robert |

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." I quote the words of C.H. 396 | Any verses about praying for the dead? | 2 Cor 6:2 | Robert Nicholson | 55778
Suzy: I do not believe that the Bible teaches prayers for the dead. The Lord Jesus said, The Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins" Matt. 9:6 It touches our heart when children are affected by death of a mate. It would be wonderful to be able to give hope or help to one who has passed into eternity. However, at this point it is in God's hands and he knows those that are his. As I am sure you are aware, King David's son Absalom tried to take his father's throne and was killed in the attempt. We hear the sorrow of a grieving father as he thinks of his adult son who has died and gone into eternity. He cryed "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son! King David was right with God and was wishing to exchange places with his son. This was a prayer which could never be answered. This is my humble opinion and in light of the Word of God, that we have a responsibilty to be honest and faithful with our young people. They need of know of God's love, of God's eternal Son who payed that awful debt on the cross that we could be forgiven and that it is God's desire that we come to know him through Christ when we are young. Jesus said "Suffer the children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such are the kingdom of heaven. I think the lesson each one of us should see in death, is that we cannot live forever and that we must prepare to meet God. Praying for someone whose eternal destiny is fixed, would be futile. However, we should pray for the living who are entrusted to us. When I was a young boy we used to sing this song which spoke to my heart. "Ive a soul to be saved, May this truth be engraved, On my mind and my soul while I'm young, O how awful the cost if my soul should be lost, And in hell if I die as I am. May God bless you in your Sunday School class. Robert |

397 | DO NOT BE YOKED WITH UNBELIEVERS.... | 2 Cor 6:14 | Robert Nicholson | 53490
Dear Heaven: As I read your letter the following verse came to my memory: "...they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31) It is my prayer that you will experience the blessing which is given to those who obey God. This way is not always easy, in fact it is downright tough and as you have said "heartbreaking" May the Spirit of God work with your boy friend and father of your child and show him his need. It may be that God has great things for you both together after he has worked with you. God bless you Robert |

398 | don't have one | 2 Cor 8:9 | Robert Nicholson | 47322
Ifan1 When you trusted Christ as your saviour you were born into the family of God. Christ is our saviour who died to put our sins away forever and to free us from the guilt of sin. God who knows when the sparrow falls, how much more does he care for you and all those who are his children. A personal relationship with Christ is something which grows as we learn to rest our all upon him for every care in our life. "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." (1 Peter 3:8) I have found great comfort in the words of 1 John 1: 3-9 We know that when we were born again we realized that Christ died for our sins and that we would never again need to worry about being judged eternally since Christ bore the judgement for our sins on Calavary. However, as we walk heaven and home sin is still present in our daily life and clouds our relationship with Christ. The important thing to know is that he has not left us alone "If we confess our sins, he faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteouness" I find that there are times when I feel alone and God does not seem to care. I have found great inner peace by simply bowing before God and confessing my sin and resting on his word for forgiveness. Do not allow thoughts of despair or inadequacey to block out the fact that each one of us are unique and precious to God. We will never be anything in ourselves and yet we can be everything in Christ. It is not so much how strong I think my faith is, but rather to place simple faith in a great God. Talk to God daily and let him talk to you through his word. May God richly bless you in Christ Robert |

399 | If Works do count | 2 Cor 9:7 | Robert Nicholson | 37161
Dear bro. Handy: The verse I quoted teaches us that we should have a desire in our heart to give of our material gains or talents to God. After we become a Christian, it is important that we live our lives for God. The outward expression of the love which we have experienced in our hearts is seen in our lives. Motive is the main question to be answered when we give or do work? Do I give or work to be noticed of men or receive praise from them? Or do I give or work to please the Lord Jesus and be a help to others? Some people have money, others time and in your case skill through your business which the Lord has blessed you and entrusted you with. As stewarts of what God has given us, it us our reponsibility to use our talents for him and for his glory. For those who give out of a pure heart, the reward they have now is the knowledge that their efforts please the Lord who gave all. It is important to emphasize that good works cannot purchase our eternal redemption, since Christ paid that debt in full. When we trust in him, he dwells in our hearts by his Holy Spirit forever. Giving is motiviated out of love to Christ. God bless you in your efforts to do good to those less fortunate. In our Saviour's name. Robert |

400 | on giving | 2 Cor 9:7 | Robert Nicholson | 68334
Greetings Guitarmonkey: What would you think of 100 percent? The topic in 2 Cor. 9 is regarding a special colletion for the poor saints at Jerusalem. Paul is trying to organize and encourage the believers in this gift. He reminds them of this principle: "But this I say, he which soweth sparingly, sahll reap also sparingly; and he that soweth bountifully whall reap also bountifully" (2 Cor. 9:6) It is also a matter of personal exercise "Every man according as he purposeth"(V 7) In v. 12 he points out that this service has a twofold reward, First, in a practical sense it supplies the want of the saints. Secondly, it is a gift of thanksgiving to God. What does the Lord want us to Give? In contrast to the gift that the Corinthians were about to give, Paul reminds them of "God's unspeakabe gift"V15 This will give us perspective. In Hebrews 13:15-16 we are exhorted "By him (Christ) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But to do good and to communicate (share) forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased" After we are saved, everything we have and are, we owe to Christ. We are stewarts of what he has given us. A sacrifice would suggest the idea that it is something that goes beyond our surplus, it will cost us something; be it time, work or sharing, it is all to his glory. "God loves the cheerful (hilarious) giver" 1 Cor.9:7 I find inspiration in the words of Jim Elliot who at a young age lost his life in his work for the Lord. " He is no fool who gives, what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose" Just a few thoughts Robert |
