Hi CDBJ, Section: Bible general General question: Difference between Flesh and Spirit, August 5, 2005 Section: Bible general Original Question how is a person to maintain a clean body in relation, to the natural and spirit. I Cor 15:39 All flesh is NOT the same flesh Ask then how many kinds are there? 1. Men 2. beasts 3. fish 4. birds 5. bodies; terresterial 6. celtial..glory; 7. of the sun 8. of the moon 9. of the stars God wants us to be able to compare, see differences, make right choices in what we experience on this earth walk we are taking. To do that he points out all flesh is not the SAME... In speaking of mankind, we know we have a natural body, made of what we call flesh. This flesh to operate has cells, bones, blood, organs, the things needed to run this flesh body. We also are a spiritual "body". I Thes 5:23 God points out there are other kinds of natural bodies and names them. God points out there are different natural glories for each. If you stop and think about what God names and how each thing works, you will discern that glory has to mean the usefulness of any given subject in this context. In another sense, from the spiritual standpoint, flesh is what Paul called it, "for I know that in me, that is, in my flesh is no good thing. (why Paul?)for TO WILL is always present with me." Ro 7:18 Here we see, self-will, is in opposition to God's will, therefore Paul called it (spiritual) flesh. The deeds (or works) of the flesh, are performed by mankinds self-will, not God's will. Gal 5:19 God's will is his written word on every subject. God's word is God's will. If that were not so, why are we reading God's word to find out what is right and wrong, according to God's will? We must understand, that when a person is born again, their flesh does not change, their self will does not change, it must be retrained by God's word. I Tim 4:16 "Take heed unto yourself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this you shall both save yourself, and them that hear you." John 8:31-32, God's truth is God's word, his doctrine, his will on every subject..and Jesus said, if you continue in the word, the word or God's truth will set you free...John 17:17 Because God's word is his will, no one can say, "you never know what God will do." He has it in the book, If all else fails...Read it again Sam. You will eventually get what God is saying, how to apply it, and you will have had your exercise.. Heb 5:13-14 For every one that uses milk is UNSKILFUL in THE WORD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (God himself); for he is a babe: (14) BUT strong meat (God’s word on every subject) belongs to them that are of full age (mature in God and his word, his will), even those who BY REASON OF USE have their senses exercised to discern both good (i.e. God) and evil (i.e. satan). You don't want a garden of Eden experience where you lose out with God do you? You want a resurrection experience with the risen Lord, Jesus Christ, where you have a win, win, situation eternally. How do you keep a clean body naturally? Do the opposite of Gal 5:18-21. How do you keep a clean body spiritually? Do Gal 5:22-25 Always in Christ, C.S.M. |

Hi C.S.M., Interesting post! I've really been enjoying your contributions! Do you think that we can compare the "kinds" of flesh spoken of in I Cor 15 with Romans 1:23 "And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things," as Paul describes the degeneration of mankind, first worshipping the higher of God's creation, then descending to to lower orders? What do you think? I have another question as well. You wrote "We must understand, that when a person is born again, their flesh does not change, their self will does not change, it must be retrained by God's word." Does God improve our flesh and self-will, or does God replace them? Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Mark, All of Romans 1:1-32, in my understanding, is showing the downward "degeneration" of a human being, that is going farther away from God. It was not that they did not know God Ro 1:19, but the issue was, after they realized God exists, by the wrath of God being revealed, they "became vain in their imaginations (i.e. self-will), and their foolish hearts were darkened (turned to hatred, which is satan). Psm 14:1 The fool: has said in HIS HEART there is no God. If a person declares there is no God, from God's viewpoint, that person is a fool. That is where satan works the hardest is to keep mankind from coming to God. John 3:16 We should be asking God all the questions being asked here,James 1:5, and getting the pure truth from the study of God's word,John 17:17, and the revelation from God, James 1:21-22 in that process. Therefore they degenerated into idol worship, whether of their own wisdom, their flesh (natural) earthly appetites, which James 3:14-16, says is "earthly, sensual, devilish, wisdom." or just chose to be a Psm 14:1 person. The second question, as I perceive God's word, we are to go "from glory (understanding) to glory (understanding)" and be made in the image of God's Son Ro 8:29. How does he do this? II Cor 5:17 Therefore, if ANY MAN (that includes all of us) be IN CHRIST, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. Gal 6:15 For IN CHRIST JESUS neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature (avails it all). This new creature is the spirit of man, created of God, by the new birth of that spirit. I Thes 5:23, We are a spirit, we have a soul, we live in a body (an earth suit, designed for our comparatively short stay on earth. That is, compared to eternity.) No, God does not improve our flesh, that's our job, AFTER salvation only. You cannot work FOR savation, but there is much work on understanding, and becomeing doers of God's word, AFTER we are saved. I use the example of a baby being born into the world. They are helpless, uneducated, demanding, needy, growing, learning, maturing, through many stages of growth. That is how I see the salvation experience, and have experienced the salvation experience. I have come to recognize this is not a 30 second sprint, but a life-long, continual learning, changeing, growing, adjusting to fit God, endeavor. Think about it, when you were a baby you didn't know anything you know now. How did you get from there to here? By the process named above. God will never replace your self will. We must be willing, as Jesus was, and is willing, to be on this earth's surface with this testimony, "I came to do thy will O God." John 4:34, John 6:38 and many more statements of Jesus on this theme. This is testified in Phil 2:5-11 Paul speaking of the example Jesus left us to follow, Let this mind be in you...it is a matter of you "letting" or choosing to think like Jesus, speak like Jesus and do like Jesus AFTER you asked him to save you. There’s a difference between before and after! How do you do that? Read everything he said. Know that is who you are and what you are supposed to be doing, follow his example in every area of your life, and when God gets through with you, you'll be his exact image! Think you can't get there from where you are? That's no biggie for God. God is bigger than what's the matter, he is able (fit and qualified) to do exceedingly abundantly above ALL we ask or think. Eph 3:20-21 So just THINK BIG, don't limit God by what you think he can or will do. Just always base it on what he says we can have. If he doesn't say we can have it, we don't need it anyway. But just know, there are tons of stuff in the Bible for believers. If you are a believer, quit reading those things written to unbelievers. Say this to yourself, "I am in Christ, he is my head, I am his body Eph 1:22-23, therefore because my head is a believer, his body, (which is me),is a believer. I, as his body, have everything my head has." Don't believe that? Want a scripture for it? John 16:15 Jesus, our head, said, "All things that the Father has are mine: therefore said I, that he (the Holy Spirit) will take of mine (all the Father has), and shall SHOW IT UNTO YOU." Didn’t it just say he is our head and we are his body? Does your body go anywhere without your head? Or vise versa? No? Jesus and his body are the same way. C.S.M. see next post |

Hi C.S.M., I guess I am thinking of this in these terms: Rom 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. We were dead in trespasses, now we are, as you also quoted, new creations, but not improved old creations. All things are made new. Now all things are of God. As for the rest, we are told in Rom 6:6 "Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. In other places we are told to "put off the old man", see Eph 4:22 and Col 3:9, but we are never told to "improve the old man". So my understanding of our Christian walk is to prevent the old man, our flesh nature, from having any influence or reign in our lives, and to live according to the new creation, which is created according to the image of Christ, but not to try to change the old man into the new creation. The new creature has already been made, and is perfect with Christ's righteousness. We just need to now live according to the work that God has done in us. So I say all of that to say this: I realize I may be talking about something slightly different that what you are talking about. Your thoughts? Also, you referred to 2 Cor 3:18 "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.", but you appeared to equate "glory" with "understanding". Is that correct? If so, why, if it meant "understanding", would it not have said "understanding"? Please forgive me if I offend, I have no wish to be offensive, I just want to understand better what you are saying. On the whole I agree with your posts, I just have these questions. Love in Christ, Mark |
