Ed, you bring up again a rather interesting point. The pastors of my previous UM church used and recommended the NRSV, which I do not like based on Isaiah 7:14 and Gen 1:2 and many other instances and the pastor of my new church uses the NIV because of it's clarity and universal acceptance. If you can help me with evidence to support the Zondervan deception, I will discuss it with my pastor. Jim

Ed, as a further note, the pastors recommended these specific bibles, but have said that any bible version is o.k. with them as long as it is Read. The UMC that I left has about 1,800 people attending Sunday services. It has 4 pastors and probably 35 teachers. They each have their favorite bible and recommend it. One of the lady teachers recommends the Living Bible. The older folks will read only the King James. The NIV has seemed to be a pretty good compromise.

Newoldstock If the Pastor recommends it I would not say anythign because you could find yourself in conflict with the pastor. NIV is a good translation, I just don't like the publisher and how they handled what they did. But that has no effecon teh good or bad of the NIV. Therefore if your pastor recommends it then I would let the issue die. Be Blessed and keep up the good work of the ministry. EdB |

Ed, your advise here seems sound, so I will follow it, however you are the one who orignally said "As a teacher you should instruct your people that the NIV they carry was published by a company that will go to any length to sell a book, even if it means changing the word of God." Would not your original advise be even more of an issue than confronting the Pastor? Should the flock be lead away from the recommendation of the shepard? Please be assured that I am not trying to "hammer" you on this point and I mean no offence. This is all in Christian love.

newoldstock - My two-cents' worth is that a Bible version should never be a source of division or contention among God's people. And here I use "Bible version" in the sense of its being a legitimate translation of Scripture, not a deliberate perversion of it. The absurd claims of the King James Only-ists should be enough to teach us the unwisdom of being rigidly inflexible in the matter of Bible translations. --Hank
