Early Christians followed apostolic tradition Acts 2:42, 2 Timothy 2:2 "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit Thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also" The great commission by Christ was to preach not to write. Greetings Al! May I address a few of your points my friend? 1) Not everything is in the Bible! This is certainly true. However, everything that God wanted to be in the Bible is there! :-) 2) Traditions: The traditions mentioned in the verses you cited are the direct teachings of the Apostles. One cannot make the leap from these verses that all 'traditions' are therefore authoritative. The teachings of the Apostles were certainly authoritative, but other teachings are only authoritative as long as they agree with those teachings. 3) Personal interpretation: 2 Pet. 1:20 does not forbid personal interpretation of Scripture. It simply states that the source of Scripture was the Holy Spirit, not personal interpretation. 4) Acts 8:30-31 does not teach that believers need the Pope to interpret Scripture for us. In fact, Scripture exlicitly denies that we need some one to explain Scripture to us. 1 John 2:27 - "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him." Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
