Greetings Makarios! It is good to hear from you old friend! How are things going? I concur with your position. If we forbad the reading of anything with a 'non-Christian' element, we would not be able to read even a murder mystery! :-) Fantasy is fantasy! I have been reading fantasy and SciFi since I was six years old. It has never impacted my view of the real world in the slightest. I love Star Wars, but I don't believe in some all pervasive Force. I have read Lord of the Rings, but I don't believe in wizards. I have read SciFi, but I don't believe in aliens. I have read Harry Potter, but I have not begun to practice witchcraft. It is simply entertainment. Now, if anyone chooses not to read these books, I have no problem with that decision. But, if anyone tries to make that decision for me - I would have problem with it. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim We have discussed this issue before so I won't re-plow old ground. You said, "...But, if anyone tries to make that decision for me - I would have problem with it." With this I totally agree. There has been a lot of mention of the Star Wars and the force. Let me tell you my findings and you draw you own conclusions. I have ran into more than just a few "Christians" that have incorrectly equated the force as the power of the Holy Spirit and the dark side with the power of Satan. Not only was this incorrect but their view is so self centered instead of the Holy Spirit enabling or empowering them to serve God they fantasize over how this power can be used to serve their self interests. Their view is nearly identical to that of the Word of Faith movement where God through the Holy Spirit becomes the servant of man fulfilling whatever they can justify from mishandling scripture. I often wonder how the magical power of Harry Potter is viewed? I wonder if people fantasize over how this power could serve them? I also wonder if the Deceiver showed up and offered them such power what would be their response? Oh I know it is just “harmless” fantasy but don’t you wonder why God told us to avoid such fantasy? God’s protection go with you. EdB |

Greetings Ed! It's been a long time since we spoke on the forum.. I agree: it would be tragic if some people or group were to attempt magic, or to attempt to 'use the force' after reading a Star Wars or Harry Potter book. That definitely would be a violation of Scripture. But I, for one, do not have a temptation to do those things after reading these series. I pray that a non-Christian does not find the allure to do these types of things after reading such a series, but I do not believe that the works themselves support that. I merely see them as fantasy. Blessings to you, Makarios |
