Hi, I would like some help on answering a friend's question. She believes one can loose their salvation and I've been trying to do a study that tells her you can't loose your salvation once you are really born again into the family of God. Can you help? Thanks! |

I'm afraid you're dealing with a very old and controversial subject going back several centuries with John Calvin on down. If you'll punch in key words like, once saved, always saved, Calvinism or loose salvation into the Word Search at the right of your screen, you'll get a tremendous variety of opinions, statements and scriptures supporting each position. My position is that a christian can most certainly loose their salvation if you fail to maintain a good healthy relationship with God through His Son. There are many scriptures I can cite but I'll try to restrain myself to just a few. I'm sorry but I have to go on an errand. I'll get back to you with those few scriptures over the weekend. I do hope you'll study the matter in your Bible and pray about it. God bless. --Rowdy |

Rowdy, Not to kick up an argument for the sake of arguing, but it would be nice to confine (and define) such concepts in keeping with Biblical terminology! Where exactly does scripture say that a christian can loose their salvation "if you fail to maintain a good healthy relationship with God through His Son"? The reason I ask is because this is an important matter that pertains to one's walk and relationship. I understand what scripture says- both pro and con. However,if one can loose their salvation according to YOUR definition, how would they get it back and when would one know whether one was at any specific time saved or unsaved? Bradk May I suggest these verses to begin your discussion. Rev. 3:5 'He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. Evidently this is a real threat if not then we would have to say God is just fooling. Then consider these verses. Exodus 32:32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin--but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written." Psalm 69:28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous. Then to make the discussion interesting we must include Hebrews 6:4-6 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. And Hebrews 10:26-27 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES. There will be those that say that really doesn’t mean what is says but rather it means thus and such. However it clearly opens the door for a lost of salvation. People stand on Romans 8:35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? And claim this is proof but it does not mention whether we ourselves can separate ourselves from Christ. Then consider the parable of the wedding we see one there without his wedding clothes and he is tossed out. Matthew 22:10-14 "Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests. 11"But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, 12and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless. 13"Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 14"For many are called, but few are chosen." Lets make this interesting can we lose our salvation or fool ourselves into thinking we are saved and are not? Something has to be going on for this many verses to imply a lost of salvation. EdB |

EdB, Thanks for the input and verses to reference. Give me a couple days and I'll respond in depth. You may very well be right to conclude that MAYBE one can be or is fooling themselves into thinking they're saved when they're not! Tim Moran has interestingly alluded to the fact that he believes one can "reject" God's salvation- and there may be some merit in that too. My quick take is this: there are numerous verses that CLEARLY tell us how we are saved and on what basis (Eph. 2:8-9, Titus 3:5, 1 John 5:13ff). However, there are no direct verses saying "this you can do to lose your salvation", etc., so I conclude that we must interpret what is less clear ( Heb. 6 and 10) by what is clear. Interestingly, I see a much stronger emphasis in Hebrews of the perseverance of the saints ( Heb. 7:25, 9:12,15). The plaguing question in my mind is "eternal life" by it's very definition is just that. Something eternal cannot be temporal (John 3:16). I believe we need to carefully define and understand what salvation encompasses and entails to fully understand the impact of this doctrine. It is certainly not a license to sin or live and ungodly life- Romans 6 answers that question without doubt. "I've personally found Titus 2:11-12 to be one of the most overlooked, if not neglected truths that deals with our MOTIVATION to live godly! I'm not denying that there are some (at least) seeming ambiguities whereby good people of God have and do disagree. I do side very strongly with the completed work of Christ on the cross and His all-sufficient saving grace ( Heb. 7:25). But again, I seriously think with reference to my question we need to limit our discussion to terms that are found within scripture- regardless of what side we take in matters of Eternal Security! Let's not say something scripture doesn't say:-) We'll be in touch. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Greetings BradK! I have dealt with this topic many times in the past, so anyone interested can simply search the archives. However, I would to highlight two points. 1) No one 'loses' his salvation! 'To lose' something implies an accident. I am walking down the street and I lose my wallet. It falls out of my pocket while I am unaware and don't realize that it is gone until later. So, I despise this term in connection with salvation. :-) 2) Our 'works' have nothing to do with us getting saved and they have nothing to with us 'losing' salvation (there is that word again :-) ). So many will argue that we have to 'do' certain things to keep salvation. This is clearly contrary to Scripture. As you mentioned, I do believe that some one can 'willfully' reject salvation. I believe this is the person mentioned in both Heb. 10:26-31 and Heb. 6:1-6. Both of these passage mention an individual who knew the grace of God but rejected it. But, how common would this be? I think not very common at all. I could not conceive of ever willfully turning my back on my Savior. But, I have know of one individual who seems to fit this picture. My brother-in-law was a dedicated Christian for many years, until he met a woman, and married her, who was into new age garbage. Now, he has turned his back completely on Christ. The key difference with my view and that of those who say that one can 'lose' his salvation is that the change occurs because of an act of will, not an act of sin. I thoroughly reject the notion that anything we 'do' can effect our salvation. By 'do', I mean actions or inaction. Finally, I have also posted several times that Heb. 6 has been misinterpreted by many. The tense of the verbs in Heb. 6 makes it clear that some one cannot be brought back to repentance 'while' they are crucifying the Son all over again and subjecting Him to public disgrace. If these actions cease, there is nothing in the verse which would indicate that they could never be brought back to repentance at that point. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi Tim, I think we'd be in agreement based upon what you stated in response to my post:-) Both your points are well noted. I am still unsettled with respect to the example of your brother-in-law( and I'm not at all denying the situation). I agree that those situations would seem to be "rare" However, it is ultimately in God's hand as to their fate. I always appreciate an intelligent discussion on disputable matters- where we can still seek to know and learn. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
