1 | How do we tithe properly? | NT general Archive 1 | CDBJ | 109868 | ||
You are absolutely right and I stand corrected with regard to the word tithe not being mentioned in the New Testament. What I meant to convey is that it is not to be an issue with Christians. From what you are saying it sounds like we both hold about the same position. I think that a lot of believers get their offering or collection for the Lord’s work mixed up. It seem as though they think that God can be bribed with their measly giving. God is a God of grace and cannot be bought as it were. They think that by giving a certain percentage that God has to bless them and as a result give them back more then they gave. It doesn’t work that way in the New Testament. It would be no big deal for God to drop a million dollars in our laps and then we could give as our heart dictates. We are to give after the Lord prospers us in the New Testament. 1 Cor. 16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. Notice is says, as God hath, “past tense”, prospered him. The problem with most believers is that if God were to dump a fortune in our laps most of us wouldn’t be capable of handling it and our life would go down the drain, so to speak. A lot of believers don’t have the capacity for wealth and the Lord knows it. It would be like me giving my son when he was just a kid, a nice 45 long Colt peacemaker. I like guns but I loved my son too much to do that; I sure wouldn’t be doing him any great favor with such a move because it would cause more harm then good, he didn’t have the capacity for it and couldn’t handle it properly. The Lord knows our capabilities and capacity better then we do and He prospers us through grace, and when He does we should give as our heart dictates. So many believers give because they feel that they have too! 2 Cor. 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. The words, or of necessity, are also in that verse. The truth is God isn’t broke, and if it isn’t easy for one to give X amount don’t do it. One should give to the Lord’s work because they really love doing it and it doesn’t strap them down because the Lord has prospered them to the point that it’s no problem or a big deal. When someone asks the question with regard to tithing of his or her money and time etc. before or after taxes, it is already to the point of being a necessity or they wouldn’t have asked. If someone wants to dispute this point I don’t care to debate it, take it up with the Lord, and yes I know what it says in the Old Testament! Well I guess I just got put on the TBN black list! Have a great day, CDBJ |
