Dear Cheri, The Levitical priesthood was established by God in Numbers 16:5. They were to be direct descendants of Aaron. Nevertheless, we are told in Genesis 14:18 that King Melchizedek was a "priest of the most high God." Here we have a mystery, for how could this man, not even a descendant of Abraham, be a priest of God? We don't have his lineage, let alone the details of his priestly order. Nevertheless, we are told that it was necessarily superior to the Aaronic priesthood, because yet-to-be-born Levi submitted to the priestly ministrations of Melchizedek through Abraham. The author of Hebrews leverages this "likeness" of Christ (Hebrews 7:15) to show this order's: 1. Commission by God 2. Timelessness and eternalness 3. Royal and sovereign connection 4. Superiority to simple, human ancestry 5. Excellence in never being or needing to be passed on to another As you make the comparison that Val suggested, itemizing each of the points brought up by the author of Hebrews, also take time to thoroughly study Psalm 110 and Genesis 14.
