1 | Filled by the holy spirit? | Eph 5:18 | kalos | 59294
Mike7: You ask: 'what is meant by being filled by the holy spirit over and over again? Are you not filled once you are saved?' A similar question is "Does not one receive the Spirit with salvation?" An answer: To answer the last question, first we must determine what is meant by "receive" the Spirit. The fact is we are *baptized* by the Spirit, *indwelt* by the Spirit and are supposed to be *filled* with the Spirit. Let's take a closer look at each word. When you receive Christ as your Savior -- when you believe (trust, cling to, adhere to, rely on) Him for salvation -- and are born again, you are at that time BAPTIZED (placed) into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13).( Note: this has nothing whatever to do with water baptism.) Every believer is INDWELT by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9). We are commanded to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). To be "filled" with the Spirit means to be "controlled" (not like a robot or puppet) and "empowered" by the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, we are baptized by, indwelt by and filled with the Spirit (the Holy Spirit). I hope this helps. If you want further clarification, you need only to ask. Grace to you, kalos |

2 | Filled by the holy spirit? | Eph 5:18 | Ray | 59339
Hi Kalos, I wrote to Mike7 through you by mistake in the post above. Sorry. But if you don't mind I will continue to write to you about some of the things that we have spoken about before. You may remember that I did not see any "control" by the Holy Spirit. In Romans 8:14 we see that we are being "led" by the Spirit of God. And we have received a spirit of adoption as sons. We have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again. As I have said, I believe that we are filled with the holy spirit, lower case. Romans 8:9-11 speaks of the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Him, and His Spirit; so I would say that God indwells us. Genesis 41:37, NKJ, "So the advice was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants. And Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?" [a divine spirit, NASB] Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you." Best wishes. From the heart, Ray |

3 | Filled by the holy spirit? | Eph 5:18 | kalos | 59344
Filled with the Spirit 'X. THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT. ' A. DEFINITION. Being filled means being CONTROLLED by the Spirit (Eph 5:18). 'B. CHARACTERISTICS. 1) Filling is commanded (Eph 5:18, the verb is imperative). 2) Filling is repeated (Acts 2:4; 4:31). 3) Filling produces Christlikeness (Gal 5:22-23). 'C. CONDITIONS FOR BEING FILLED. '1) *A dedicated life*. Yielding to the Spirit's CONTROL, though commanded, is voluntary and necessitates an act of dedication. This includes two aspects: initial dedication (Rom 12:1-2) and continual dedication of one's life (Rom 8:14). 2) *An undefeated life*. Victory over sin in daily experience is necessary in being CONTROLLED by the Spirit (Eph 4:30). This means responding to the light of the Word as it is continually revealed (1 John 1:7). 3) *A dependent life* (Gal 5:16). ' D. CONSEQUENCES. Being filled or CONTROLLED by the Spirit means: 1) A Christlike character (Gal 5:22-23). 2) Worship and praise (Eph 5:18-20). 3) Submissiveness (Eph 5:21). 4) Service (John 7:37-39)' (emphasis added). 4 | Filled by the holy spirit? | Eph 5:18 | Ray | 59381
Hi Kalos, Ryrie has good material here, but his definition of being filled or CONTROLLED by the Spirit is not expressed in the references he gives. There is no word CONTROL in any of them. Even Galatians 5:24 which speaks of our belonging to Christ Jesus or we who are Christ's or are of Christ; even that verse does not speak of His controlling us. We live and walk by the Spirit and are being led by the Spirit. Verse 18. Be that as it may, have you thought (or anyone out there) thought about the possibility of lower case holy spirit? I was led tonight to compare Luke 9:55 and 2 Timothy 1:7. Luke 9:55, "And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them? But *He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;..." 2 Timothy 1:6, "And for this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For *God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline." Again, I see the Giver and a gift. The Holy Spirit and a holy spirit. I would welcome anyone's input. P.S. John 3:34 with a lower case spirit could also be compared with Luke 9:55 and 2 Timothy 1:7. From the heart, Ray |
