1 | Is tithing a command for chriatians? | 2 Cor 9:7 | BradK | 214799
Hello Vintage, Allow me to add a comment if I may:-) Malachi 3 is used quite often to support "tithing" as being "for us", yet it cannot be divorced from it's context. In verse 6 it addresses, "O children of Jacob"! The questions 'who is speaking', 'who is being spoken to', and 'what is being spoken about' are critical to understanding any passage- particularly this one. I don't believe this passage addresses the Church- the Body of Christ. I'd refer to 2 Cor. 9:6-7. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

2 | Is tithing a command for chriatians? | 2 Cor 9:7 | Beja | 214801
The answers being given which argue that malachi chapter 3 doesn't apply to the church are arguing from a dispensational view point with regards to the church and Israel. As dispensational thought falls, so do their answers. I leave you all to your own thoughts on this. As for me I think it does apply to us. In Love, Beja |

3 | Is tithing a command for chriatians? | 2 Cor 9:7 | stjohn | 214804
Dear Beja, Thank you for your post. I think I see the bases of the view for keeping to the one tenth tithe, and I agree with the spirit of it. The problem I see though, is that, holding to this legalistic view is, to many give out of their surplus and don't really give back to God what is rightfully His. They give a tenth, and that tenth has no real effect on their finances. And most would not even think of giving a cent more, having given their dutiful tenth. Jesus, gives us His view of the proper heart behind giving. "And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on." Mark 12:41-44 I believe we are not held to the rule set down in the Old Testament, but we, His Church, are held to an even higher standard. And if we don't have the spirit of gladness to give to God from the abundance He has blest us with, I think He would rather we didn't give at all. After all, He doesn't need the money. Just my two cents :-) John |
