1 | Self control and Spirit controlled? | 1 Cor 9:25 | RAVEN | 50105
Hello Mommapbs Please try and understand that I am not saying that just because a person picks up the bible a reads that they will be filled with the Holy Spirit. But to be filled with the Spirit one must read the bible, open up their hearts and be willing to take what the bible says as THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD. Not merly that it contains the Word, but that it IS the WORD. If you would re-read my post you would see that I was stating this. There are only two ways that a person can learn of the Gospel of Christ. 1. They can be preached to and 2. they can open up the bible and read for themselves. Either way by submitting to this and obeying, they thru study of the word will be filled by the Holy Spirit. Please read Romans 10 Israel Rejects the Gospel 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,[1] Who bring glad tidings of good things!"[2] 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "LORD, who has believed our report?"[3] 17So then FAITH COMES BY HEARING, AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD. The Word of God (the bible) is the only thing we have, to learn about the will of God. 1 John 3 9Whoever has been born of God does not sin(meaning that we do not continue in sin), for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. Luke 8 The Parable of the Sower Explained (1) 11 "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Luke 8 15But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, HAVING HEARD THE WORD with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience His seed is the Word which we read, like I stated in my last post, Ephesians 3 3how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4by which, WHEN YOU READ, YOU MAY UNDERSTAND my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: Colossians 1 3 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; 5because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, OF WHICH YOU HEARD BEFORE IN THE WORD OF TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL, 6WHICH HAS COME TO YOU, AS IT HAS ALSO IN ALL THE WORLD, and is bringing forth fruit,[2] as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; 7as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8who also declared to us your love in the Spirit. Preeminence of Christ 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you MAY BE FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL IN ALL WISDOM AND SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING; 10that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and INCREASING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD; The post you replied to was about being controlled by the Holy Spirit. Nobody can prove being controlled by the Holy Spirit. But we have the written word to help mold us an shape us into a form which God will accept us. Isaiah 64 8But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand. Hope this helps you to understand my point. Raven |

2 | Self control and Spirit controlled? | 1 Cor 9:25 | Mommapbs | 50220
Greetings again Raven! You stated: "Nobody can prove being controlled by the Holy Spirit. But we have the written word to help mold us an shape us into a form which God will accept us." WHERE is your Biblical support for these statements? Reformer Joe observed that we CAN know that one is controlled by the Holy Spirit with the following: "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits."' --Matthew 7:16-20 "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." --Galatians 5:16-23 "So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh--for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live." --Romans 8:12-13 John Reformed adds: "Rom 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. I do not believe that the Holy Spirit violates our wills. I do think that there is a kind of synergism between the Soverignty of God and the free will of the christian. Please don't ask me to explain how this works! I only know that the bible indicates such a relationship. For instance. It is God's will that I pray for my enemies. This command goes against the desire of my flesh. Nevertheless I must obey God. How can I pray for those I hate and still offer a prayer that is more than lip service? Only the Spirit Himself, dwelling within me, can make such a prayer pleasing to God. Perhaps as I bend my knee before Him I will be reminded of the man I once was. This painfull reminder may serve to humble me and cause thanksgiving to well up in my breast. Now I am ready to pray from the heart for my enemy. This is where it really gets tricky. I have just performed a good work by praying for my enemy. I realize it was the grace of God that enabled me to be obedient and that it was the work of the Spirit in my heart that caused me to offer a spiritual prayer...but the bible also says: Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. So it was part of His eternal purpose that I would offer this prayer. He had pre-ordained it before the foundation of the world. Yet I did it freely!" End of John Reformed's post. I (Mommapbs) suggest that we can know by the result of His indwelling in the manifestation of the His gifts. "But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." 1 Cor 12:7 The passage in Matthew 7:15-23 also suggests that we should be aware of "counterfeit gifts." 1 John 4:1 commands us to be discerning and "test the spirits"! We CAN KNOW the difference! The entire fourth chapter has many key points for us to consider - I hope you will ponder these at some point. I'll address your second statement in my next post as I am running out of room. Mommapbs |
