2 | What is your favorite Bible version? Why | 1 Cor 3:22 | Aixen7z4 | 141019
My answer: All of them. I do believe that most Bible translations are the honest effort of hardworking believers endeavoring to give us the word of God in an accurate and readable fashion. The problem is that accuracy and readability often do not go well together. Literal translations (Young's, for example) sound awkward. Readable translations (The Message, for example) are often wildly inaccurate. The New Living Translation seems to be a good combination of accuracy and readability, and it has become a personal favorite. However, I believe the best choice is to use all available translations. Individuals may choose to leave off their list the ones they find dishonest and unfaithful to the originals. |

Aixen7z4: It certainly is true that successfully combining accuracy and readability in a Bible translation is not an easy task. Like you, I appreciate the wide range and variety of English Bible versions that are available. The New Living Translation (NLT) is an excellent choice, a fine blend of accuracy and readability. When I am reading the Old Testament and trying to understand it -- the text and the historical, cultural, language background -- my first choice is the Life Application Study Bible in the NLT. Using all available translations is good advice. Of course, the best translation is the one an individual reads -- the one he can both trust and understand. The most accurate English Bible in the world does one no good if one cannot understand it. Thanks for your good reply. Grace to you, Kalos |

4 | What is your favorite Bible version? Why | 1 Cor 3:22 | CDBJ | 141041
Greetings Kalos, One has to watch when reading anything in the Living translations; they interject their thoughts instead of what the Koine Greek actually said. Example Luke 21:22 (King James Version) For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. Luke 21:22 (New Living Translation) For those will be days of God's vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled. Notice the error in translation! The word for God, THEOS, in the Koine Greek, isn’t even found in this verse and it is “likely” speaking about the vengeance of Satan, which is rampant in the last days before the rapture. Therefore the Living Trans. is the exact antithesis to what was being conveyed in the original language. Compare the following with Luke 21:22 Rev. 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. CDBJ |
